youngsters out of high school who are casting about for a job Im thinking in terms of summer hoping that most of high school graduates have college in mindh f There was a time when I channeled somexof my concern to college graduates but in re cent Im told what Im about to say Iruethis grad uates of our colleges and uni versities dontl iiave much to worry about Jobs are not scarce This year Im going back some material I covered ma commentarysome in lass as a matterof factrrjt was a commencement talk given by Henry Bdu PontYicepresi flentof the corporation bearing his family name His audience was the graduating class at La Salle Collegein Philadelphia once best known as a basket ball powerhouse Immediately some will sus pect a connection between that magic name Du Pont and the position he held I grant there could be something more than a coincidence involvedBut there are a lot of Du Fonts in Delaware and a lot of Du Ponts in E I du Pont deNemoun and Company Inc Not all reach the high posts But Im asking you to judge Henry B du Ponts advice on its merits His talk eye arresting title How to Make a Hit With the Boss He had four concrete and easytounderstand suggestions f First of these was credited to his renowned uncle Pierre S du Pont It was contained in a letter to a young man just entering the business world Heres No l Take the job no body else wants to do Does this asked Henry B du Pont seem like a negative And answering his own question he suggested that maybe his uncle had meant it less literally than it may seem There are he added many young men and women looking for the pleasant assign ments and not so many who stand ready to take on the more exacting ones We must take the sour with the sweet The employe who will undertake whatever needs doing and do it cheerfully is bound to make a hit with any boss The next suggestion maybe principle would be a better word by Mr Du Pont was a related one that is first What you can give is more important to you in the long run than what you can get That needs some explaining and Im going to let Mr Du Porft do it This principle is particularly important at this time when many companies are competing for the services of competent people and emphasizing their attractions by way of benefits privileges and pay If you are in the position of weighing an offer I urge you to ask What can I offer rather than What am I of fered In the long run what you can give will be the factor that determines your progress your opportunity and most of Twrn te 2 Please 30yeor selling record market shudders NEW YORK UPI The wide
