ballsized satellites wound up Wednesday like the the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean Undaunted the Navy said 4t would try again next month Fired aloft shortly before mid night by the Vanguard rocket the 20inch ball flew 2000 miles out into space then plunged back to earth Five hours of baffling silence followed the launching before Dr John P Hagen director of Proj ect Vanguard announced that the 21Vkpound sphere did not go into orbit THE ENGINES of the three stage Vanguard all fired as ex pected Hagen said But satellite was not boosted into a horizontal direc tion necessary to place it in orbit Instead it flew out in a wide arc then feUback into the earths at mosphere It was the fourth failure in five tries since the Vanguard rocket first was fired as a complete threestage vehicle The first Van guard exploded four feet off its launching pad The second blew apart 20000 feet off the ground The third launched Vanguard 1 the SVzpound satellite now in or bit The fourth fell into the sea BY CONTRAST the Army has a record of two successes in three tries with its JupiterC sat ellite launching rocket which hurled the two Explorers into or bit Tuesday nights Van g u a rd launching appeared at the start to be perfect Within minutes an optimistic Navy announcement said the engines in all three stages oftheDocket had fired in sequence1 In quick succession thereafter the satellites signals were picked up at downrange listening posts in the Bahama Islands and the British West Then came a confusing silence In San Diego Calif where ra dio receptions brought first word that the United States three other satellites were in orbit and had completed their first trips around the earth listeners waited in vain HOURS AFTER the launching a baffled Vanguard spokesman in ely HONORS FOR UNKNOWN The flag covered caskets of unknown servicemen of World War II and Korea rest in the center of the Capitol rotunda in Wash ington as members of Congress diplo mats and others pay their some scat tered light showers but only Du buque reported a measurable amount The mercury sank to a state low of 34 degrees at Atlantic early Wednesday morning Mason City had 36 Spencer reported 37 and Waterloo 39 Readings elsewhere ranged up to 48 at Ottumwa and Davenport The forecast called for a pleas ant day in Iowa with generally clear skies and high temperatures ranging from 66 to 77 degrees Thats a little cooler than Tuesday when the mercury hit 84 at La moni Ottumwa and Burlington In its fiveday forecast the Weather Bureau predicted tem peratures would average near nor mal over the Memorial Day week end but holiday celebrations may dampened by rain WASHINGTON House Appropriations Committee Wed nesday ordered a speedup in mis mile and antisubmarine warfare programs It did so in recom mending in new cash for defense in the coming fiscal year Approving more than the Defense Department had asked tbe committee vetoed ad ministration plans to reduce the strength of the National Board Wednesday jcreated t h r e e transcontinental super skyways in a move to les sen the danger of aircraft colli Spent Cautious Note by President WASHINGTON UPI Presi dent Eisenhower said Wednesday he believes the recession has largely spent its force But he cautioned against any bptjmism that a healthy economic upturn would occur in the near future He told a news conference that some of the economic indices point to an upturn But he said one swallow does not make a summer Some parts of the na tionaleconomy such as the auto and other durable goods indus tries still are not doing too well will be 40 miles wide Within them planes will be separated by at least 1000 feet vertically and 10 minutes flying time horizontally THE CAB said the airlines which already have pledged their pilots
