Truck Explosion An explosion which was heard throughout most of Mason City Friday night ripped through a gasoline tank trailer and welding shop and killed the owner of the shop Edwin L Colby 58 owner of Colbys Welding Shop 225 2nd S was welding on the tank trailer when it blew up and killed him The blast rocked nearby residents out of bed and shattered windows within a half block area The explosion which occurred about p was heard throughout U S Navy in Long Beach most of Mason City a f tVYW One resident in the Highlands daughters Mrs Glenn Arlene about two miles away heard the Terrill Mason City and Mrs roar Dick Young 652 Monroe S Donald Bonnie Bonner Bristow seven blocks from the blast scene said the explosion woke bur Minneapolis three sisters him out of a sound sleep Working said death was caused by a cgm pound fracture of the skull Colby also suffered a fractured right leg said Dr Christopherson Authorities said Colby was ap parently welding underneath the truck He was knocked about six feet by the blast The bottom of the gas transport was almost completely blown out and a gap ing hole was ripped in the side Shop Gets The force of the blast went out the side of the transport into Colbys shop The inside of the structure was in shambles after the explosion The explosion drew hundreds of spectators to the scene An hour after the blast onlookers were still milling around Homeowners in the vicinity were busy board ing up windows that had been blown out Windows were blown out in the neighboring Barclay Co steel April 26 1897 the son of Edwin and Carrie Colby He
