of the West Texas plains country called Lubbock I was the specially in vited guest of an Alcoholic Anonymous group one of sev en AA units in that city which in 20 years has grown from 30 000 to 160000 population That is why I referred to Lub bock as amazing Fabulous might be an even more accurate word By the same standard of semantic values unforget table would not be too strong an adjective to apply to my1 evening with this AA group Early in the day one of my hosts had asked me if by chance 1 might be interested in sitting in on an AA meeting scheduled for that evening The idea sounded good to me because of my contacts with AA in my home community in an advi sory capacity Quite a few other local business and professional people have associated with me in this I should explain During the course of theafter noon another of my hosts re vealed that he was aware of my plans for the evening and let it be known that he would be there too What a coincidence I rea soned that these two Texans should share my concern for those who have fallen victim to what has come to be definitely and continued day mild Wednes FiveDay Iowa Temperatures for the week will average five to 10 degrees above Herter Monday prior to conferring with President Eisen hower on a counterproposal to Russias plan for banning nucle ar weapons lesls Macmillan talked with Herter and other US officials at the British Embassy in advance of joining Eisenhower at the White House The party then flew by helicopter to secluded Camp David Md where their test ban discussions will be held During the two or three days they will spend together the two Allied leaders will also make a prcsummit review of relations with the Soviet Union They may lay down some new guidelines for development of proposals to be put before So of ice breaking equipment in the Missis sippi River on Iowas eastern border Here the Coast classified holism as a disease Alco IMAGINE MY SURPRISE however when at the opening of the AA weekly meeting that night I found my two sponsor ing hosts sitling in on the ses sion not as advisers counselor or consultants but as full fledged members and in good standing They had won their spurs in the regular way it de veloped and were seated in the symbolic circle ready to offer their testimony and lend a help ing hand to any brother in dis tress It would be my guess that there isnt in Lubbock and its environs atop the West Texas caprock two more beloved or respected citizens than these two men who have found release from gnawing misery and en trance to a new contented hap piness and security through an observance of the tenets and teachings of Alcoholics Anony mous In this company however they were just two members Alcoholism is no respecter of position or prestige It is in no sense confined to Skid Row ONE OF MY HOSTS Intro duced me to the group and ex plained that as an Iowa editor with the residual instincts of a probing reporter I might be making some mental notes for a feature story The proposal which had been discussed dur ing the day with certain key members as I learned later was given approval This then is merely carrying out my assign ment For obvious reasons this couldnt happen in my home community I would be in the company of my own neighbors But in a place many hundred miles from my home town everybody was a stranger to me except for the two through whose good offices I was there Some in reporting to their fcl lows used full name others only a given name But so far as I was concerned neither was identifying The lone of the meeting was established
