grea as Iowas its total acreage suit able for being put under the plow is probably not one tenth as grca as ours How its people undei such circumstances are able to achieve such a high standard o living takes rank with any ques lion which has presented itself to me on this trip around the world In seeking the answer one of of the first things you run into is that Nor wegians utilize jusl about every foot of culliv able land even plols on Ihe sleep sides 01 the lofty tops of hills and moun tains I haven seen anything W EARL HALL like it since we left Bali two months ago Another explanation of Nor ways prosperity is the of the sea seemingly built into its people It goes back to 800 when for two centuries the Vik ings who roamed the oceans from havens on these fjordlined sea coasts were the terror of the whole world They claimed all they saw and they saw a lot Shipbuilding Spurts Now that maritime instinct manifests itself in three ways shipbuilding water commerce and fishing Before lations consultant testified Wed nesday he made purchases total ing for Dave Beck over a period of years ending with 1953 He said I did not know it was union funds he used Items purchased ranged from washing machines and refrigera tors to knee drawers nylons and possibly garden And Shefferman said he took care of an 38 repair bill for fixing Becks false teeth in Chicago Shefferman said he believed the Loveless to Study Tax Relief Bill DES MOINES Gov Her schel Loveless said Wednesday he going to know the complete details on what it means before deciding whether to sign a meas ure that will give farmers an estimated in exemp tions from sales taxes The bill passed by the Senate 3610 would exempt farmers fron paying sales tax on gasoline or arm chemicals such as plan iprays and livestock remedies Not Decided Loveless told his new confer nee he has not definitely de cided one way or the other vhether he will sign or veto the bill He added I am not so much concerned about the loss of reve nue as I am about the principle if picking out certain items for exemption One of the questions I want to hink about is whether it is more mportant to remove the sale ax on medicine for animals 01 or During the debate on the bil n the Senate Tuesday propo nents argued that it was unfair to equire farmers to pay sales lax n gasoline used for crop produc ion when industries do not pay ales tax on power they use Tax Exemption The governor commented that he exemtpion from sales tax on ower was about the only one of ny magnitude granted to indus ry The governor said he would fa or a lax relief bill to grant ex mptions from sales or income ax to all segments of the popula on if the Legislature knows here it can replace the lost The farm bill originally passed ic House by a vote of 931 If Fouryearold Patty McPhail Mason City a pretty blonde girl who has been blind since she waslSmonths old has been chosen to lead the 1957 Iowa fundraising crusade ot the American Cancer Society Patty is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert G McPhail 811 Harrison McPhail is employed by the city water department as a meter reader Patty lost one of her eyes at the age of four months and tha other at 13 months She had a cancerous disease called retinoblas which threatened to spread to her brain unless the eyes were removed Pattys parents said that they agreed to release Pattys story in the hope that
