communist mob stormed a hospital at San Severo Saturday in an attempt to remove comrades who were among the 4C persons wounded in a pitched battle there Thursday Police riot squads checked the attempted invasion of the hospital After 30 minutes of brawling about the grounds the crowd was driven off and order was restored At about the same time another communist band at nearby Ascoli Satriano attacked the local jail where leftist leaders were held That assault ended abruptly when armed carabinieri appeared in force As the weeklong unrest throughout Italy erupted in new violence one of the wounded in the San Severo rioting died The death of Michele Di Nunzio 23 raised the fatalities to 4 Armored security forces fought a pitched battle for 6 hours Thurs day with massed communists who rioted through San Severo in bloody Puglia province of south Italy near Foggia Settlement of Chrysler Strike Closer Detroit Mich a dol larsandcents agreement stood as the major obstacle to ending the 60dayold Chrysler corporation strike Saturday In a day packed with action at the bargaining table both Chrys ler and the CIO United Auto Workers made concessions Friday that had observers predicting an end of the strike by the middle of next week Some 89000 Chrysler workers across the nation walked off their jobs Jan 25 when the company and union failed to agree on ad ministration of a pension plan Some 61000 other workers have been thrown out of work by the shutdown Idle assembly lines have kept 300000 vehicles from the market Chrysler earlier offered monthly pensions to aged workers but the offer was rejected by the UAW when management refused to set up a trust fund to be ad ministered jointly by both sides The union demanded a pension social security and hospital plan that would cost the company 10 cents per man hour Friday Chrysler made its big gest concession since the start of negotiations The company offered to establish a retire ment fund for the 5year duration of a new contract The union took the next unex pected step by accepting the offer on one the com pany add another to the fund before the 5year contract Expired That was where negotiations when federal and state con ciliators suggested that bargaining adjourned until 2 p m Sunday to give both sides iime to study the proposals says he will rule on Monday when the 3rd week of the murder trial of Robert E Bedna sek 24 opens here Bednasek talked with a clinical psychologist and the director of the University of Iowa student counseling office only 2 months before his arrest for the killing of a beautiful Iowa coed He is charged with strangling Margaret Anne GeeGee Jack son 20 last Dec 11 Her body was found in the Empty Arms room ing house where Bednasek stayed The statein building its case against the Iowa psychology stu dent Friday called Dr E J Sho ben Jr director of the student counseling service Defense coun sel however objected to his tes tifying as to the conversation be tween Shoben and Bednasek last October Defense Attorney Clair Hamil ton argued that Dr Shobens rela tionship to Bednasek was the same as that between doctor and patient or attorney and client He said under Iowa law Shoben could not be permitted to testify to any con fidential conversations he had with Bednasek Iowa Code The Iowa code lists attorneys counselors physicians surgeons the confidential clerk or steno grapher of any such person min ister of the Gospel qr priest of any denomination in this confidential category It is believed the first time that the question has been raised in this state as to whether a clinical psychologist in the position of counselor would come under the statutory definition However if the state fails to get Dr Shoebens report into the record it already has the testi mony of an Iowa City police offi cer Harland Sprinkle testified Fri day that Bednasek told him short ly after his arrest that prior to Miss Jacksons death he had a homicidal impulse to kill the girl and had gone to Dr Shoben Sprinkle testified Bednasek told him that Shoben sent him to a psy chiatrist 2nd Week The state closed the 2nd week of the trial by introducing 4 pic tures of the injured face and neck of Miss Jackson taken at the morgue 4 pictures of the rooming house where she died and a state ment Bednasek signed after his arrest The defense counsel made objection to admission of signed statement or the rooming louse pictures It unsuccessfully opposed admission of the other pictures The defense was successful in ceeping out of the record 2 vest jocket size books described as 3ednaseks diaries and a pocket Dook calendar Judge Gaffney said that until he court knew what some of the ninute notations in the books were he was not going to admit them 53 Czechs Prefer to Return Home 85 Land in U S Zone of Germany in 3 Airplanes Frankfurt Germany ff The U S airforce announced Satur day that approximately 53 of the 85 Czechs who landed in the U S zone of Germany Friday want to return to their communistruled homeland The Czechs landed at the Erding air base near Munich in 3 planes Two of the planes the airforce said landed voluntarily The other put down with the chief pilot at the point of a gun No Knowledge The president of the Czech air line the announcement contin ued was the only prominent or important person in the group most of whom had bought tickets for Prague and evidently had no knowledge that they were to land in the U S zone of Germany The planes the airforce said departed from Bratislavia Os trava and sepa rated cities in and were cleared for Prague Preliminary investigations by USAFE U S airforce in Europe authorities indicate approximately 53 persons have expressed a de sire to return to their homeland the communique concluded Mass Plot The announcement did not say whether the landing was part of a mass organized plot what was meant by landing voluntarily or whether the Czech airline was not otherwise one of those who wanted to stay or go back The statement said 67 men 16 women one child and one infant were aboard the planes It identi fied the aircraft as Czech com mercial planes of the DC3 type WAC Found Slain at Air Force Base TirSa Rafael Cal young Wac Fairy E Decker of York Pa was found slain Saturday at near by Hamilton Field an air force base The field public relations office said her death was caused by strangulation through violence Her body was discovered near the Wac barracks and the time of death was fixed between Sam and a m Several men have been detained for questioning the PRO said and Game Hunter Dies Houston Texas Buck of Bring Em Back Alive fame died here Saturday He was 66 The big game hunter died at a m at Hermann hospital where he was admitted in late February for a checkup Death came as a result of cancer which had halted his ad venturing into the wilds of Africa His wife Muriel who has lived at a hotel here since Buck was admitted to the hospital was by his side at her husbands death Funeral services were scheduled for Sunday Beardsley to Make Talk at Independence Independence Wil liam S Beardsley will speak April 11 at the ppening of the patients screening center at Independence state hospital The center is being set up to prevent overcrowding at the hos pital Patients seeking admission will be screened to determine which ones could be treated out side the inves tigators appeared Saturday to be nearing a showdown with Senator McCarthy on the spy for Russia case which he calls a test of his communisminthestate depart ment charges That impression developed at the capitol after a justice depart ment announcement late Friday It said confidential FBI data on one principal case had been given to the senate foreign relations sub committee which is looking into the Wisconsin republicans charges It was learned that the informa tion provided was about the man McCarthy contends is Russias top espionage agent in this country Denies Charge McCarthy has said the individ ual is connected with the state de Dartment The department denies The Washington Post said Sat urday it learned the FBI files in no way support the charge made against the individual by Me Carthy The paper said those files do contain some derogatory in xrmation on the individual But t is not the sort of information hat would come close to support ing the sweeping charge McCarthy made The senator has declared he is willing to let the credibility of his general charges hang on the out come of the Russian agent case Top Priority Last Tuesday McCarthy gave the name of Ditch Rock Rapids Ev erett Sheldon 21 of Madison S Dak was killed early Friday when the car he was driving went ou Union Meets on Dispute With Rath Waterloo A meeting of members of the CIO Packinghouse Workers local was in progress here Saturday and union officials described it as important The meeting was called in con nection with a labor dispute which has resulted in the closing of the hog kill cut and allied depart ments at the Rath Packing com pany this week Union officials have called the work stoppage a lockout The company says it suspended work ers who refused to resume job ac tivity after halting work to engage in a grievance discussion Union and company officials had a scheduled meeting Friday after noon In another development District Judge R W Hasner Friday grant ed a defense motion asking con tinuance until the May term of court of 13 remaining cases which grew out of the strike and riot at the Rath plant in May of 1948 The state consented to the con inuance Remaining cases include 7 charging conspiracy 4 charging malicious mischief and 2 charging assault with intent to commit great bodily injury Lists Names of Certain Lawmakers Mentions Those Who Had Dealings With Subversive Group Washington house un American Activities committee searched Saturday for a missing file said to contain names of con gressmen who once had dealings with an organization now tagged subversive A full investigation will be made in an effort to determine the present location of the file Chairman Wood DGa an nounced in a formal statement Friday night Matthew Cvetic a former FBI undercover agent had insisted a short time earlier that the commit tee had the list that he actually saw it in its possession Wood replied that the commit tee s records fail to show it ever was turned over to the committee Wants List Back The mystery came to light be cause Cvetic wants the list back Cvetic was testifying about com munist activity in Cambria county Pa when Rep Kearney RN Y asked whether he had any addi tional testimony of importance he could give the committee Cvetic replied that the commit tee had many documents which had been in his possession and that he would testify about some of them if the committee wanted to ask him questions One document of the American Slav saicj contained letters correspondence and contributionsof Congressmen senators and other political lead ers Not Used Cvetic said he wants it back since it was not used in connec tion with his testimony about communism in western Pennsyl vania Wood noted in his statement that there has was recovered Saturday morning The body of Jean Packard 11 vas recovered about 50 feet be ow the point where he fell into the stream The recovery was made by firemen from Renwick Humboldt and Clarion
