crevice feet underground died Tuesday after rescuers repeat edly had failed in a desperate struggle to free him The 20yearold student and amateur explorer Neil Moss fell feet first Sunday afternoon into the Devils Hole of Brit ains deepest cave He had been unconscious since Sunday night but early Tuesday had been re ported breathing quite well with the aid of oxygen admin istered to him at intervals Police announced his death as Britain tensely followed the heartbreaking rescue attempt here in the English Midlands THE HUSKY 170pound col legians shoulders were wedged so tight 40 feet down in shaped rock shaft that four at tempts to pullhim free Monday failed A rope slipped under his limp arms broke each time Rescuers tried to work from ends of the hollow shaft holding Moss captive Tuesday after an argument which ended with his shooting and kill ing her and turning his gun on himself Dead were Earl Downs 29 and his wife Wanda 28 head nurse at the Rose Norris Nursing Home 220 5th Dr Ralph E Smiley acting Cerro Gordo County coroner ruled he deaths murder and suicide The couple died sidebyside n the kitchen doorway at the nursing home after Downs had jursued his wife through the louse firing at least two shots at her and then shooting self with a 38 caliber pistol Downs lived at 627 8th THE TRAGEDY occurred about with the nurs ing home full of some 22 elderly patients and several employes Rose Warner a nurse there who said she had known Mrs Downs for some six years said that thecouple had been mar ried last Novi 14 and separated about a month ago Mrs Downs she said had been living on a farm near Dougherty with her mother Mrs Harold Froning Downs last words as he knelt at the side ofhis dying wife were Wanda I love according to Mrs Don Wickwire at work as a cook roadside pole A news photographer arrived in time to pose mother and son with the car still in launching posi tion n the kitchen when the twin shootings happened Mrs Norris said Mrs Downi lad worked for her at the nurs ng home for eight The dead man also had worked there as an orderly until about a year ago MISS WARNER explained that Downs came to the house short y before and went to he basement with his wife They argued there and then a shot was heard from the base m ent Mrs Downs ran from the asement she said and Warner answering her scream met Downs on the1 steps They struggled there as Mrs Downs ran to hide in the louse As Downs forced his way up he basement steps and through he house to the front door Miss Earner yelled to Mrs Downs o run outside Mrs Downs ran out the back loor and around the house to he front There she and her msband quarreled again Two bullet holes in the front storm door showed that Downs had ired twice at his wife SHE CAME running into house and through the hallway yelling that she had been Miss Warner added She then ran into the kitchen Mrs Wickwire was in the1 kitchen She said she saw blood coming from Mrs Downs mouth Then she swung around and dropped to the Mrs Wickwire her description of the murder suicide Then he Downs came and knelt there by her and said Wanda I love And then I heard the shot that killed Mrs Downs was found lying on her back with her husband at her right side and his right arm across her neck The pistol was in his right hand The body of Downs was taken o the Colonial Funeral Chapel The body of Mrs Downs was taken to the
