morning train ride across the isthmus paral leling the canal construction a four hour mo tor ride under c o iu p e t e n t guidance about Balboa Heights and Panama City a de lightful 1 u n c h cials of the Panama republic an audience with the Panamanian secretary of state and a visit to the canal ad ministrations great building in Balboa Heights Even at the close of the days riding I hadnt yet accustomed myself to the Isthmian custom of driving on the left side of the road The practice dates back to the building of the canal when West Indian laborers brought up in the Britishtradition were brought into Panama in great numbers They insisted on driving their mules on the left side Near ihe canal administration building is an eleven hundred bed hospital bearing the name and honoring the memory of General Gorgas whose triumph over yel low fever made the canal a possi bility after the French had squan dered some two hundred million dollars on the project General Gorgas and Teddy folk Mason City were riding the horns of dilemma Monday all because two local teams the Holy Family Maroons and the Mohawks of the public high school will battle in the opening round of the boys high school basketball state meet at the Drake fieldhouse Des Moines Thursday night at oclock Like a bombshell the pairing announcement broke on Ihc town Monday and immediately Ihc Question of the day became Which side arc you rooting fur The unique predicament became possible for the first time tins year when parochial schools were in vited to join the public high school in Ihe animal race for the state prep basketball crown In the sectional district and sub state pairings t b e parochial schools were listed under the towns they came from The pair ings for Ihc slate meet are ar ranged alphabetically and thus the two Mason City schools were put into the same pairing A total ot 250 tickets arc on sale at the Mason City high school for the Mason City re served section at the boys high school basketball state meet Drake fieldhouse Des Moines Thursday night The tickets priced at 75 cents arc for Holy Family and Mason City high school fans and for the general public The tickets arc
