Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - March 22, 1962, Mason City, Iowa North Iowas Daily Newspaper Edited for ON CITY GLOBE The VOL 102 Associated Press and United Press International Full Lease Wires newspaper that makes all North lowans neighbors HOME EDITION MASON CITY IOWA THURSDAY MARCH 22 1962 10c Paper Consists or Two One No 36 No photos in press building JFK wants his privacy By MERRIMAN SMITH WASHINGTON stairs at he White House Guardians of he new frontier like to believe that never be fore in relatively modern Amer ican government hasthere been such freedom of information and such untrammelled access to news Sometimes this is a matter of viewpoint The other night President Kennedy slipped out of the White House to go to a private party When he reached the building where the festivities were in progress his Secret Service protectors viewed with disapproval the waiting pre tence of two press association photographers No pictures decreed one of the agents This is private And where was this private anctuary where lensmen of the fourth estate were forbidden to piy their trade The public streetlevel lobby the National Press building structure largely occupied by men and women to whom news gathering and interpretation is fiot only a trade but a way of life And speaking of news the United States Information Agency USIA currently plans to send two reporters to Cali fornia with President Kennedy for written news distrib uted by the government over seas the other to do broadcasts for the Voice of America Although the President has at the Uni Van denberg Air Force Base it would be interesting to know what USIA and VOA have to say to the people of the Congo about the Presidents two days in Palm Springs land of the threecar garage and heated swimming pools Another journalistic mile stone 0 Roy Chalk wants access to the Presidents news confer ences Chalk is the Washington and New York Transit Company as well as a real estate financier His Transportation Corp of America recently purchased El Diario De Nucva York a large Spanishlanguage n e w s p aper published in New York The editor Stanley Ross wrote the White House asking that Chalk be given credentials as a Washington correspondent with the right to attend Ken nedy press conferences and ask questions Chalks editor also applied for accreditation to the press gal leries of Congress The chances of Chalk receiv ing a coveted White House press pass would seem o be a bit remote since recipients must first be cleared by the congres sional galleries which insist that more than onehalf of the re porters earned income come from his reporting job This however could be the start of something big Wouldnt it be interesting if Jimmy Hoffa George Romney Eddie Fisher Henry Ford II Mort Sahl and Toots Shor all brought newspapers and turned up at Kennedys news conferences firing questions and dropping little comments along the way Ik Preparation of script and cast for the movie version of PT 109 the story of President Kennedys World War II naval experiences has run into de lays The White House has re quested or suggested certain script changes and is having something to say about casting n Something this year the President will have some new helicopters at his disposal The new whirlybirds will have double engines and double rotor s thus increasing the safety factor considerably These however will be more or less interim aircraft because eventually he will be flown on short hauls by a turbojet vertical lift plane which will provide not only added safety but much more speed His current helicopters are singleengine jobs HORSEPLAY IN S Rep Ben Jensen in clinch with former heavyweight boxing cham pion Jack Dempsey represents Iowas 7th District in Congress They
