ROBERT J SERLING WASHINGTON UPI The airlines are getting fed up with such items as toilet seats for an electric razor plug and a nose cone that costs if purchased from one company and only if bought from another In brief the airlines are con vinced that million price tag on their new jets is inflated be cause of unrealistic pricing policies by manufacturers One airline Trans World thought enough of the problem to call in recently every sup plier with whom it was doing business and read the riot act TWA cited these examples IT WAS PAYING for a toilet seat identical to one sell ing for On one jet the flight en gineers seat cost on an other jet an almost identical seat cost only 270 per cent less One manufacturer charged for a cabin temperature control unit ahotlier only TWA wanted to convert six pistonengine aircraft to cargo planes and needed a small galley for crew meals The lowest quoted price a figure almost equal to the cost of a completely equipped Cadillac one TWA official said The airline asked its own maintenance shop what it would cost to make the galleys there The estimate was for all six planes Is it any wonder then that we doubt a price policy even exists A TWA vice president told the suppliers THE SYMPOSIUM heard a few other complaints In one case it asked a manufacturer for overhaul manuals to be used in repair of a certain mechanical part The supplier replied that due to the simplic ity of our unit overhaul man uals are not required The simple unit happened to contain 119 individual parts TWA also complained that many suppliers refused to sell individual piece parts insisting that the airline must buy a whole new unit Typical was a small timing motor which cost to replace It would have cost only to repair if individual parts were available To drive home the costprice problem TWA broke down the individual price tags on most of the 125000 separate parts that go into a new jetliner Samples for a cargo door handle for a nose gear door for
