Spanish presented simultaneously for 6689 pupils in 61 schools is to trot out the word miracle Nor is what Ive told you the whole story Several hundred adults are formally enrolled in that language course and sev eral thousand more sit in on the classes because they are such excellent TV entertain ment Actually theres no miracle about it unless perhaps you still regard television as a miracle as I do Any commu nity with the same resolution and the same resources could duplicate what has been done in this Iowa area Here are the essential in gredients A solid belief on the part of responsible educators that Ian guages are important and that languages can be best learned when one is young A TV station administered by people who believe they have a responsibility to promote edu cation and culture in the area served by it A speech teacher who com bines mastery of subject mat ter groundwork in the princi ples of teaching and a convic tion that learning can be fun A sizable number of class room teachers receptive to new ideas and willing to cooperate in the program to the limit of their ability THESE ARE THE THINGS that gave Spanish the zest of a game for about four thousand sixth graders last year The same formula is bringing fun and satisfaction to 6689 pupils this year about threefifths of them in the sixth grade two fifths in the seventh And even that isnt all of the story Already plans have been com pleted by the seven counties which took the lead in this co operative effort to include he eighth grade in the program along with sixth and sevenfh grades This remarkable program which has had worldwide notice had its inception less than two years ago Two Mason Cilyans M C Martin county super intendent and P 0 Brunsvold Mason City superintendent wondered over a sandwich whether the cause of a foreign language couldnt be advanced on a broad front through the utilization of the electronic medium A SHORT TIME LATER rep resentatives from seven coun ties Cerro Gordo Floyd Franklin Hancock Mitchell Winnebago and Worth were in a huddle on the same subject A contact was established with Douglas Sherwin program di rector for KGLOTV and con versation turned from broad principles to specifics Out of that conference came an offer to make facilities of the station available on a cost basis There was no time to waste Local school boards had to be sold on the proposal 38 schools and 214 classrooms within the 7county area Other schools came in on the program to make the grand total 61 Martin is loud in his praise of the part played by the seven county school boards Their co operation in pooling efforts and money made the program pos sible he emphasizes Without this he adds wed never have got off the ground With the groundwork laid the quest for a qualified teacher started It wasnt easy Tt never is But by a stroke of good for tune the search led to El Paso Texas sent of perhaps the coun trys finest program of lang by TV SALVADOR SIQUEIROS
