first week after the usual spring recess without advancing any major tax bills Instead both House and Senate turned their attention to other mat ters But both in their actions on minor bills gave an indication of the way they are thinking on tax measures It had been expected that bills to bring in more state revenue would receive top priority when the lawmakers returned from re cess But so far the only major reve nue measure passed by either house is one to boost the state sales tax to 3 per cent with the levy removed from certain foods This was passed by the Senate be fore the recess Not Expected Neither have any major appro priation bills received approval But it wasnt expected that these measures would be ready yet as a lot of study and committee work is necessary before the larger ap propriation bills are introduced The House has been moving much more rapidly than the Senate to clear its calendar During the week the House acted on 40 meas ures passing 38 and killing two The Senate meanwhile disposed of only 14 bills 13of which were passed and one voted down Much of the Senates time however has been occupied in considering ap pointments by Gov Leo Hoegh and in a censure action against Harold Young superintendent oi the Iowa Temperance League end temperance lobbyist Indications of how the wind blows on taxation came in the House and Senate in their actions on two different bills The Senate voted down 2721 a measure to increase the pay of auditors who examine the books of counties municipalities and school districts This was inter preted to mean that sentiment
