Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - March 10, 1933, Mason City, Iowa FOUB LABOR ASSEMBLY TALKS POLITICS No Action to Be Taken at Present for Operators by Group Discussions on the Joca political situation the niotion picture oper ators situation the legislative pro gram and other matters took up the time at the regular meeting of the Mason City Trades and Labor as sembly Thursday evening Candidates in the coming election will be interviewed to determine stands it was determined at the meeting No action concerning the opera tors was taken and will not be taken unless an attempt is made to open theaters with nonunion men ac cording to William H Grlebllng secretary of the assembly Some laborers who have been out of work for some time are prob ably more deserving of the privilege of working on projects receiving relief aid than some of those now being helped it was decided accord ing to Mr Griebling Influence will be used to bring benefits to such de serving persons he said The assembly expressed itself pleased that the gross Income tax measure was not passed as pro posed and the award of the Decker contract to an out of town con tractor was criticized MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE Three to Give Reports on Temperance Session Major and Spence Clear Lake News MAYOR CERMAK BORNE TO GRAVE Chicago Streets Lined With Citys Thousands to Pay Tribute CHICAGO March 10 tween streets lined with the citys thousands braving a biting March wind the body of Anton J Cermak today was again borne on its cir cuitous path to the grave A funeral cortege that waa blocks long and composed of city state and federal officials relatives and friends soldiers and citizenry es corted the casket from city hall to the Chicago stadium where the as sassinated mayor once achieved prominence in the national political arena Slowly the procession wound through the loop and over the two mile route A 200 piece band played the dirges as military units and citizens marched through the street At the Chicago stadium civic ser vices were to be held over the cas ket with clerics of three faiths speaking Thenthe body was to be taken to Bohemian national cem etery for burial with Masonic rites ir Marks to Engage in Checker Contest for Title E w Barker and John Marks will engage in a series of 18 checker games to determine the champion ship of contests held for the past several weelts at the Y jM C A The date of this final competition has not been set These two finalists will play in the concluding round as the result of two previous series An open round robin was first staged and the four high men Barker Marks H G Comstock and Percy Sanford then played In this contest Barker edged out Marks by only one point and it was decided to hold the final series Results of the year complete and final return ol income as possible How ever when by reason of Illness or absence from home additional time is required a reasonable extension of time may be granted Applica tion should be made to the collect or of internal revenue for the dis trict In which the taxpayer files his return together with a full re cital of the causes for the delay Except in the case of taxpayers who are abroad 730 extension may be granted for a period of more than six months An extension of time for filing the return does not extend the time for payment of the tax or any installment thereof unless so speci fied in the exteaslon Application for such extension should be made to the commissioner of Internal revenue for the district in which the taxpayers return is filed The applicant should set forth under oath the specific roason for desir ing an extension and should clear ly indicate what hardship if any would result if the extension were not granted The amount for which the extension is desired should be stated The commis sioner will not consider an exten sion of time of payment unless made on or before the due date of the tax or installment thereof if the extension Is granted Interest at the rate of 6 per cent a year is collectible from the date the pay ment should have been made If there had been no extension to the expiration of the period of the ex tension Butler Attend Conference at i Washington W P Butler H B Major and the Rev William H Spence pastor of the First Methodist church were expected to return Friday evening from attending a conference on temperance which was held in Washington Tuesday and Wednes day This conference was made up of Christian men and women from all sections of the United States Sunday morning at oclock at the First Methodist church these three will speak on A Na tional Crisis and a New Strategy In the evening Mr Spence will speak at on Intimate Side lights on What We Saw and Heard in Washington The Easter play scheduled for Sunday sponsored by Tone Brothers distributors of Tones Old Golden coffee will be presented by Sheriff J M Robert sou at a meeting in the lobby of the Eadmar hotel at 3 oclock Sat urday afternoon The presentation scheduled for the Cecil theater was changed to the hotel because of the closing of the theater according to Glenn Smith of Nashua who has been In charge Of the contest D W Olsen Honored by College Society D W Olscn Mason City has been elected vice president of the Indus trial Arts society of Iowa State college Olsen came to Iowa State college in the fall of 1931 from the Mason City Junior college where he spent a year While he was In the junior college he was a member of the track team and the mens glee club Omaha Fire Officials Will Visit Mason City The Mason City fire department will doubtless be inspected by offi cials from Omaha now on a tour of Inspection authorized following an investigation of the recent dis astrous hotel blaze there The tour to be made by the fire commissioner and three officials 01 the department will include Mason City because the report of W S Rathbun underwriter official point ed to Mason City as having a de partment of unusually high caliber according to an article in the Omaha WorldHerald Frank Frankson 111 Long Time Dies RUDD March Frank sou died at the Cedar Valley hospi tal yesterday afternoon He had been ill for about 10 weeks He was taken to the hospital last Saturday for the second time and another op eration was performed to remove pus from the lungs He is survived by his wife and five children Mrs Minnie Frisbee Lawyne Mrs RUE sell Koehler Mrs Wilber Witzel and Miss Grace Frankson Burial will be in the Rudd cemetery Birthdays of Four Rotarians Observed CLEAR LAKE March P Walker cashier of the First Na tional bank spoke to Rotary club members Thursday noon on the present financial and banking sit uation of the nation The birthdays of J H Miller A B Phillips Lloyd Liesenberg and Dr A S Dice which occur in the early part of March were ob served Tax Reduction Session Planned at Courthouse CLEAR LAKE March tax reduction meeting will he held for the 48 township delegates Saturday at 10 oclock at the assembly room of the courthouse Mason City The meeting is also open to the public according to Theodore Bach of Grant township read a paper on the history of Cerro Gordo county and Mrs E H Rich
