Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - March 4, 1965, Mason City, Iowa Military still losing trained men By FRED S HOFFMAN WASHINGTON AP Despite two military pay raises in as many years the armed are losing trained offi cers and enlisted men at a seri ous pace An Associated Press survey showed Thursday that the serv ices regard still inadequate pay poor housing prolonged separa tion from families and eroded fringe benefits as major factors The inability to hold onto trained men complicates an al ready difficult military man power problem Recruiting has been dropping because of specu lation that the draft may be eliminated something which is now considered unlikely The Army reported that more than three out of four junior re serve officers are leaving serv ice after completing their obli gated duly It said about the same 75 per cent of firstterm enlisted men are declining to sign up for a second hilch The Navy said that last year we lost over 70000 firstenlist ment men who met the stand ards for reenlislmcnt more than 12000 of them electronics specialists It spoke of serious short ages of officers in the grades of lieutenant lieutenant com Disputes Rigler charge of outsiders in Capitol mander and commander with current deficiencies totaling about 2700 officers The Air Force said our most critical retention problem exists in areas where the skills are in the greatest demand by indus try OvcraJl the firstterm reen listment rate of airmen dropped about 6 per cent in two years to a level of only 295 per cent in fiscal 1964 Air Force officer retention also was about 7 per cent below what the Air Force said is need ed The Marine Corps reported that the firstterm reenlistment rate has declined over the past three years and is still going down However the Marine Corps said it has not yet delect ed a significant drop in officer retention The AP survey came a day after the new chairman of the House Armed Services Commit tee Rep L Mendel Rivers D SC proposed that the pay of the nearly 27 million men and women in uniform be raised an average of 107 per cent Rivers calculated his bill would cost an estimated bil lion a year It would come on top of billion in military pay raises voted by Congress in two stages since 1963 CLARE AP Sen Joseph Coleman DClare the assistant majority leader in the Iowa Sen ate has taken issue with state ments made by Senate Minority leader Robert Rigler R New Hampton Rigler claimed that Gov Har old Hughes Democratic State Chairman Lex Hawkins and cer tain labor leaders are calling all the shots for the Democrat iccontrolled legislature Coleman replied in an inter view Wednesday Businessmen in the state have turned their backs on the Democratic Party in Iowa in the lean years and the party has been supported by the work ing man Now that we have ma jorities ir both houses it is ex pected that the laborer should have a voice in our policies Coleman said Rigler knows that there have been no Demo cratic path of the car The accident occurred as Miss Taylor and her French chauf feur Gaston Sanz were return ing from the funeral in France of Sanz 17yearold son He was killed at a shooting gallery un der circumstances which have not been clarified I saw Miss Taylor get out of the car a bystander said She was staggering about in the roadway with her hands to her head crying and sobbing Then she walked to the dying woman rolled her mink coat into a pillow and tried to com fort her whHe they waited for an ambulance Miss Taylor followed the am bulance to the hospital where Mrs Ryan was pronounced dead Sanz was driving Miss Taylor from the airport to a studio where her husband Richard Burton was making a film Burton was notified and went with the chauffeur to a police station Authorities said no charge had been filed A spokesman for Miss Taylor said Mrs Ryan had walked onto a stretch of road with no speed limit and it was impossible to avoid her White flower stallion marks Beemer funeral TROY
