Courier OTTUMWA of the outstanding family dynasties in Iowa high school basketball is Rare deal as Celtics lose on their home floor BOSTON AP Coach Fred Schaus isnt surprised that the Los Angeles Lakers took two of only three games the Boston Celtics have lost on their home court this season Any time we play the Celtics vve feel were going to win Schaus said Wednesday night after Los Angeles came away with a 104102 victory at Boston Ln we didnt we should hang a proper attitude for the team most likely to meet the Celtics in the finals of the Na tional Basketball Association championship Wednesday night VAULTER BOOSTS RECORD AGAIN CITY Burnette Iowa sophomore pole vaulter broke his own Iowa record when cleared 14 feet 4 inches at last Saturday The old mark was 143 made by Burnette Feb 13 He had orig inally broken Gardner Van Dykes mark of 141 which had since 1957 at an least temporarily Oltumwa Walshs elimination in the Boys district tournament ihis week means that at least for the next three years the name of Putnam will be miss ing from the Gael lineup To Walsh Foes this should be reason for jubilation Few high school teams in lowa have gotten more basketball mileage out of one family than Walsh has from the lanky Put nam brothers Mike Jim and Bob Indiana selects Lou Watson as basketball coach BLOOMINGTON Ind AP Lou Watson who has been part of Indiana University bas ketball 16 of the last 19 years will take on the rugged assign ment of succeeding head coach Branch McCracken and rebuild ing the Hoosiers Watson knew exactly what he faced when he accepted the job Wednesday effective at the end of the current season He has been McCrackens assistant since 1958 Ill lose the seven top boys from this year and its going to be rough Watson said And recruiting is getting tougher all the time Hell have help from his boss who is retiring after 24 years on the job but will stay at the uni versity as a professor of physi cal education Watson signed a threeyear contract and announced that Don Luft will move up from freshman coach to be his assist ant In the last six years this trio scored 3593 points and hauled down 2631 rebounds That is an average of 163 points and 12 re sounds for every appearance in a varsity game One season the brothers finished as the top Ihree scorers on the team They have been instrumental in helping Walsh post one of the states best fiveyear wonloss records 102 victories and only 16 defeats Most of those victories came against larger schools Walsh lias an average daily attend ance of 129 students Best known of the brothers i points and 17 rebounds a game this year anc for his career had a scoring average of 14 points a game In a few years the name o Putnam may be back on the Walsh roster The youngest brother Billy is a fifthgrade student who is the tallest in his class at 5foot 1 The boys are the sons of Mr and Mrs Wayne Putnam who moved here from Iowa City about six years ago The father is administrator of Urban Renewal in Ottumwa and Wapello County civil defense di rector SCI names new coach W Belmond puts three on allconference first team CEDAR FALLS James D Anderson 34 will succeed LW Mon Whitford as head base ball coach at State College of Iowa following Whitfords re tirement at the end of the cur rent school year Anderson who prefers the name JD to James will as sume his new post as physical J D Anderson Succeeds Whitford in September education instructor head base ball and assistant basketball coach in September A native of Collinsville 111 Anderson is currently a physical education instructor and head gymnastic coach at Northern Illinois University DeKalb 111 Anderson began his coaching career in 1956 at Key West High School Key West Fla where he coached the baseball team to two successive state Class A championships in 1958 and 1959 He also served as an assistant football and basketball coach at Key West In 1961 he joined he North ern Illinois University staff where his
