must be exhibited in plainsight Largest Bazar Area To appreciate how revolution ary this innovation is one must have had contact with the worlds largest Bazar area here in Istan bul In the olden days anybody who stepped up and paid what the seller asked for any item would be set down immediately as an imbecile Bargaining was almost the absolute synonym for Turkish economic life Of course a change such as this caii be effected only by a highly paternalistic government And the Turkish government is that It was a fullflowered dictator ship under Attaturk but in the 18 years since his death building on the foundations laid by him the Turks have achieved quite a sizable measure of essential de mocracy But they havent gone the whole way by any means Three Problems Once Turkey had three over riding problems One of these was a low living standard based on pathetically inadequate natural resources one was an almost universal illiteracy growing out of that low living standard the third was a benighted govern m e n t tied to a religion which looked backward rather than for ward One of these problems has been solved The Moslem church in fluence has been reduced to the vanishing point But there is still a widespread poverty and the program designed to achieve un iversal literacy still has a long distance to go When I was last here the av erage annual income was being figured at as against in our country The best guess I could get in my much too brief stay this time is that the figure has grown to perhaps S200 a year as against our or thereabouts currently Stabilized Currency One of the most vexing prob lems confronting the Turkish gov ernment has been establishing and maintaining a stabilized cur rency On the open market out side Turkey the money in use here can be purchased for rough ly half as much as the level im posed by Ankara on the people of Turkey That just isnt a healthy condition How the story is coming out is anybodys guess Most assuredly however the Turks are retaining the ruggcdness of spirit engen dered in them by that fabulous character called Attaturk And just as sure the United Stales has no more loyal ally on the face of the earth at this
