in Washington D he is more convinced than ever that Iowa needs another cent of gas tax He told his news conference he also urged a representative of the Federal Bureau of Roads to au thorize proceeding with paving Highway 90 west of Des Moines There are prospects that Highway 90 might become a new shortcut lor Highway 6 CUyi Plan Hoegh and several other gover nors conferred Tuesday and then reported to President Eisenhower their reaffirmation of support of the national highway program pro posed by Gen Lucius D Clay The governor said members of the Iowa congressional delegation feel that Congress will enact some kind of highway legislation this session but they arent sure just what it will be Hoegh said he would meet next week with members of the Iowa House and Senate roads commit tees to report to them on the Wash ington conference and review pend ing federal highway legislation I believe since the Washing ton conference that my proposal for an additional cent gas tax still is in line and Hoegh said Most states are considering gas tax increases now and we need it in Iowa with or without federal road Added Hoegh has proposed that the temporary fifth cent a gallon of the state gasoline tax be made per manent and that another penny in tax be added This he said will help speed up needed improve ments in Iowa highways As to Highway 90 it is graded and ready for paving Hoegh said the Federal Bureau of Boads first approved the project and then withdrew its approval on the ground that the right of way should be wider so as to make 90 a so called access road Hoegh explained that the planned right of way is 150 feet and that access roads require rights of way up to 300 feet He said he did noi want to take any more farm land out of production Hoegh said the bureau did no inform Iowa of the need for the access road type of right of way when the bureau first approved the project He said the federal gov ernment wanted to correlate 90 with the interstate system of high ways Martin Suggests Hiking Federal Tax on Gasoline WASHINGTON brand new plan to increase the federal gaso line tax one cent or more per gallon to help pay for highways was discussed at a congressiona hearing on highway plans Wednes day Sen Edwin Martin co author of a bill embodying Presi dent Eisenhowers new road pro gram brought up the idea of in creasing the present tax of two cents a gallon by 1 or 1V4 cents An increase in the federal gaso line tax was not proposed by the President The tax boost wouk involve pay as you go financing and Eisenhower is against that The Martin
