field apron to the protec tion 01 a hangar as a heavy snow storm swept the New York area Monday Air hijrh way and harbor traffic was disrupted Judge Called as Witness in Trial of Reds New York Judge John C Knox of the southern dis trict federal court was called Tuesday as a witness by 11 com munist leaders in their challenge of the jury selection system Knox appointed to the federal bench more than 30 years ago by President Woodrow Wilson was characterized by the communists attorneys as the father of the rich mens jury system which they al lege discriminates against Negroes women Jews and workingmen The stern outspoken judge was ordered to bring with him a copy of a speech he made on Jan 22 at Allentown Pa in which he de fended the jury system The communists charged with conspiracy to teach and advocate the overthrow of the U S govern ment challenged the constitution ality of the grand jury which in dicted them when they were brought to trial 6 weeks ago Since then attorneys for the communists have paraded wit nesses before Federal Judge Har old R Medina in an attempt to prove that the method of selecting jurors in the district is discrim inatory against minority groups Family Flees Burning Home 8 Lose Everything as Fire Destroys House father mother and 6 children were snug and warm in the Bloxham hotel here Tuesday after fire destroyed their 2room river road home south of Mitchell late Monday afternoon Mother and children fled from the burn ing building and walked three quarters of a mile to Mitchell where they reported the blaze Mrs Cecil Everly was outdoors and had just completed the fam ily washing when June 5 ran out and told her mother the house was afire When she entered the building the ceiling of tar paper wood beams and cardboard was ablaze and quickly spread to the entire house Nothing was saved Mrs Everly wrapped blankets around Carole Sue 3 Gordon 4 and June 5 and walked to Mitch ell for help there being no tele phone nearby She met her hus band at the edge of town He had been looking for employment Oiher children in the family are Melvin 6 Jay Louise 8 and Lor cn 9 Mrs Everly believes the fire started from the stovepipe in the kitchen The only clothes she has were the overalls and jacket sue was wearing The Osage fire department and Red Cross were busy Tuesday providing clothing for the fami ly An sffort was also being made to find living quarters Mrs Everlys mother Mrs Ray mond Smith of Greene is serious ly ill at University hospital Iowa City KILLED BY TRAIN Ml Pleasant True blood 76 of Mt Pleasant was killed Monday Tuesday the day be fore Lent the whole city joins in a general holiday of public mask ing and frivolity Visitors estimated roughly at 100000 joined the uncounted resi dents who went out to have fun or to watch others having it Monarch of the Rex king of carnival and lord of Lester F Alexander industrialist and boat builder His queen was a beautiful petite de butante with blue eyes and light brown hair Dolly Ann Souchon daughter of Dr and Mrs Edmond Souchon High Point Traditional high point of the revelry was the passage of Rexs parade of muledrawn painted canvas floats through the streets at con victed 5 Europeans of espionage and sentenced them to prison terms ranging from 12 to 30 years The 5 three Germans and 2 Poles were convicted of obtain ing information for a foreign pow er Confesses to Slaying of Widow Baby Byron Center Mich dug the bodies of a young widow and her daughter out of a crude basement grave Tuesday and claimed a woman confessed help ing kill them in a lonely hearts ruse she and a partner had worked around the nation Prosecutor Roger C McMahon said the woman Mrs Martha Beck 29 admitted in a formal statement that she and a male ac complice had killed an earlier vic tim in Albany N Y last January The bodies of Mrs Delphine Downing 28 and her 20months old daughter Rainelle were found in concretefilled graves in their cottage basement here after neigh bors reported they had not been seen since Saturday Police arrested Mrs Beck and Raymond Martinez Fernandez 34 who had been living in the Down ing home Prosecutor McMahon said Mrs Beck a divorcee told him she met Fernandez through a correspond ence club in 1947 Together they embarked upon a scheme whereby Fernandez met and married lonely widows defrauded them of their money and then disappeared Student Protest of Dismissal of Coach Is Ended Fayette trustees of Upper Iowa university agreed Tuesday to meet Sunday with a committee of 6 students to discuss grievances in connection with the discharge of Basketball Coach Joe Fortunato After the trustees agreed to the special meeting the students agreed to call off their stayawayfromclass movement effective Tuesday morning The board members met with students at 10 a m following 24 hours of protest demonstrations Earlier reports that some students had picketed buildings on the campus denied The incident followed the re lease by wondering if the lady from Ada would consent to marry me Snow said Retires Blushing The house roared with laughter Miss Miller disappeared blushing furiously She returned a few min utes later and announced that on a point of personal privilege I ac cept Mr Snows proposal Miss Miller is 32 Snow is 35 Details of their legislative romance was entered in the records of the house following the proposal Mon day Snow made the proposal when Rep Walter Averill announced that he had married during the weekend Snow noted that the marriage left him as the only bachelor in the house Then he popped to wedding plans Connolly in Attack on Gag Proposal Says AntiFilibuster Measure Is Strictly for Political Purpose Washington Con nally DTex declared Tuesday the administrations attempt to put an ironclad limit on senate debate is for political purposes and political classes Opening the 2nd day of opposi tion to the proposed antifilibus ter rule the 71yearold Texan said it was being pushed in the senate to pass 3 bills These are antipoll tax anti lynch and the socalled FEPC Connally said He labeled all of them unconstitutional Harmful Laws He told the senate the contro versial rules change would be used to pass obnoxious and harmful legislation Democratic Leader Lucas III called for republican help to end the filibuster and laid out a time table for a showdown early next week Before the senate is his motion to take up a resolution which would alter the senates rules so that twothirds of those voting could clamp a limit on debate at any time Oppose Measure Southerners oppose this as an opening wedge for passage of President Trumans civil rights program Lucas who heads the adminis trations forces in the senate said the southerners will be allowed to talk along until Thursday in their effort to prevent the sen axe from passing on this proposi tion He predicted that a petition to invoke the debatelimiting clo ture procedure will be filed then Up to Barkley It will be tip to keep the rule change from going through French Seize 10 Reds as Spy Suspects Paris government police have arrested a total of 10 communist spy suspects in then drive to eliminate seditious ele ments within the armed forces and the drive is continuing it was reported Tuesday The latest arrests include 2 more army officers and 2 civilians bringing the total to 4 army offi cers and 6 civilians these and concluded his confession in a burst of tears and sobs All defendants have followed the routine of making long con fessions pledginig full repentance and begging a chance to redeem themselves by working for the government Clay Favors Blockade on Red Mission Frankfurt Lucius D Clay recommended Tuesday that the army blockade a red sand stone house near U S headquar ters in which an 8man Russian for Josef Cardinal Mindszenty withdrew Tuesday their pretrial confes sions They charged instead that police intimidated them A 6th defendant also withdrew part of his confession The men were accused of illegal dealings in foreign currency and of political conspiracy with the cardinal and others already Cardinal Mindszenty was sen tenced to life imprisonment 21 days ago on charges of treason seeking to overthrow the com munistcontrolled government in favor of the Hapsburg monarchy and with illegal speculation in American dollars Usual Questioning The original confessions were made during the usual questioning by police after the arrests Zeig mond Deutsch a broker started the chain of withdrawals of the confessions He pleaded he was only par tially guilty of the charges and referred to his broken nerves He declared he had named 4 per sons as his business partners in currency trading after he had been kept alone in a cell for a month He named them as Mrs Jozsef Forgacs Ede Dukesz Vik followed He with drew his previous confession de nied with emphasis the charges against him and also referred to the alleged intimidation The defendants had followed on the stand Banker Deszo Tolnai and Broker Karoly Foldes Both have acknowledged they were guilty of trading illegally in mon ey with the court to the prince primate Cardinal Mindszenty The defendants were charged with having been
