Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - June 24, 1960, Mason City, Iowa North Iowas Daily Newspaper Edited for the MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE The newspaper VOL 78 Associated Press United Prtss International FuD Lease Wlrei that makes all North lowans MASON CITY OWA FRIDAY JUNE 24 I960 neighbors 1e Copy of Two No 229 Stop meddling hehev warned Outdoors type liked by voters By TOM OHARA New York Herald Tribune News Service WASHINGTON Voters are being besieged this year by a mountain of words spoken and written on the merits of various candidates in either major party for the office of president Yet none seems to mention what may be the most obvious key of all to the presidential cam paign what might be called the openair theory This would be that the Ameri can voters over the years pre fer the outdoor man to the in door man Starting with Vice President Nixon here is a potential candi date who played football in col lege who served in the Navy in World War II who knows baseball and who some time ago dumbfounded the sports writers of America by selecting his own alltime AllAmerica football team It is doubtful if any other man in such a high post could do this TAKE GOV Rockefeller On vacation at his Venezuela ranch he is often photographed roaring across the plain astride what looks like a Texas quarter horse wearing old trousers and bare from the waist up The Democrats are equally rich in substantiation of the the ory Above all there is Lyndon B Johnson who at 6 feet 3 and 190 pounds must qualify as a tall Texan Then comes Sen Stuart Sym ington of Missouri a former ex pert tennis player who takes his family along on the hustings to sing old American songs THERE FOLLOWS Sen John F Kennedy now the frontrun ner fighting for the nomination Not merely seeking it but fight ing for it And wit perhaps typ ical Gaelic abandon A man who by the way used his ex emplary Navy record in the West Virginia primary against Sen Hubert Humphrey By no stretch of the imagina tion could Adlai E Stevenson qualify Here is the II Penseroso of his party who publicly admits defeat in the battle of the waist line And Humphrey looks as if tie has never lifted anything heavier than a text of a speech and which he frequently throws away To go back the law has rich support President Eisenhower aside from the golf but also the West Point football player the soldier the fisherman the quail hunter in Georgia the cookout expert In 1948 Harry Truman ham mered so much against Thomas E Dewey on the farm problems in catarrhal strains that he was certainly identified as a Mis souri bucolic To be sure Deway is a swimmer and golfer but like Al Smith at the opposite end of the spectrum in 1928 probably was too Big therefore indoor for the voter AT FIRST GLANCE Franklin Roosevelt would be an indoor man except before the searing polio struck him down he is re membered sitting astride what appears to be a 16hand hunter ready for a ride through the woodlands That plus his sailing and swimming even after he was deprived of the use of his legs qualifies him And Herbert Hoover against Big City Smith readily fits the theory Hoover the Iowa farm boy the great engineer the Quaker who did for others and a fisherman Coolidge too less so than Hoover b u t a tennis player who was ingrained in the Vermont farm scene all hard work craggy mountainous and of course outdoorsy If the ascetic Woodrow Wil son 1912 and 1916 and William Howard Taft 1908 would quiet ly steal away the theory would be all but unassailable But the beloved Teddy Roose velt has no peer in upholding the voters penchant for the ex tramural type A biggame hunt Mr a conservationist a writer and a truly gregarious man New Lutheran body Dr Siefkes to head church WAVERLY Dr H W Siefkes
