the lead in a new tune show Rules Service Trades Law Does Not Apply to Shoe Repair Men DES MOINES June 21 attorney generals opinion held to day that the service trades law passed by the last general assem bly does not apply to shoe repaii men and shoe cleaners Asst Atty Gen Harry Garretl wrote the interpretation of the law which authorized towns to approve codes of fair competition covering wages and working conditions fo barbers particularly Garrett held that in the case o shoe repair men and shoe cleaner the services are performed for but not on an individual and they there fore do not come within the scope of the law Asst Atty Gen LeRoy Rader in another opinion held that hotels having a class B license are en titled to serve beer both in dining and guest rooms City Solici or Clifford years old this week spenl the day quietly at home on accounl of the illness of Mrs Gange who will be 86 July 8 His two children Mrs W B Johnson and Jacob Gange and their families partici pated in the celebration and letters and gifts were received from out 01 town children grandchildren and great grandchildren Mr Gange is a native of Canada and came to Charles City 70 years ago He was an auctioneer before he retired Mr Gange keeps informed on current events and is down town often The children of Mr and Mrs Gange are Mrs W B Johnson and J L Gange of this city Mrs E D Evans Mrs Grace Fisher Mrs Gustav Kolterman and John Gange Oak Park 111 Robert D Gange Portland Ore William B Gange Kansas City Mo They have eighi grandchildren and four great grand children 5 Others Past 90 Charles City has five other resi dents past 90 years of age Mrs E J Benson who came to Iowa in 1858 is 96 years old She lived 35 years in McGregor before coming to Charles City 42 years ago She al ways invited the Womens Relief Corps to help celebrate her birthday and her annual custom is to dis tribute to each member an attrac tive gift of her own handiwork A daughter Cora shares her home and a son and daughter reside in Minneapolis L D Huckins the only other Civil war veteran here will be 94 years old Sept 25 He was born in Canada and came to Illinois when he was five years old Ten years later he moved to Iowa and has lived in Charles City since 1892 Mr Huckins enlisted from Howard county and served three years in the war Mr and Mrs Huckins live in their own home in the south part of the city They have no children and both are in fairly good health Came From Ireland Mrs Catherine Stephens who was May 1 came to Charles City Nov 8 1904 She was born in Lim erick Ireland and came to Aurora 31 when she was six years old ier parents moved to Deerfield Chickasaw count in 1858 and she was married there to Levi Stephens Dec 31 1865 Mr Sephens died Jan 1 1915 Mrs Stephens joined the VIethodlst church in 1857 and has been a faithful member of the hurch since that time She has one on Gordon Stephens who lives in Tew York but has been with his mother since her last birthday She has been able to do her own work until recently Mrs Stephens has three grandchildren Mrs Selma De Kroyft Mary and William Stephens Mrs William Hausberg will be 93 years old July 12 She 13 the oldest continuous resident in Charles City laving come with her parents from ermany Aug 11 1857 The family came by stage coach from Mc Gregor after a six weeks journey across the Atlantic Mrs Hausberg was born in Andernach Rhenish Prussia She was married to William Hausberg Aug 30 1863 who was a prominent merchant and banker lere She and her only child Ernest Hausberg and his family live to jether in the old brick homestead JOO East Ferguson street She has wo granddaughters Mrs Ralph Rollins Des Moines and Mrs Ar thur Smith Mitchell S Dak Mrs Hausberg reads several books each week Another Pioneer 93 Mrs Pauline Dinkel is another pioneer who is 93 She was born in southern Germany and came with her parents to Wisconsin when she was three months old The family vas two months crossing the ocean Her first husband whom she mar ried in Wisconsin was killed in the war She later was married to Christian Dinkel and they moved on a farm west of Charles City in 1866 Mrs Dinkel moved to Charles City 35 years ago She and her daughter Hulda live at 1001 Gilbertstreet Mrs Dinkel is in fairly good health Her children are Mrs John Charles Dinkel Mrs Andrew kelson Mrs Fred Ebert Mrs Otto Frederick all of Charles City Mrs and Mrs Meyers Seattle Wash Two Former Charles Cityans Are Marriec CHARLES CITY June prominent former Charles City resi dents were married in California Tuesday O A Lohrke at one time manager of the sales department of the HartParr company and Miss Juanita Bates were married in Pas adena and after a honeymoon spent in San Diego attending the exposi tion they will be at home at 857 South Vermont avenue Los Ange les Cal where Mr Lohrke has pur chased a hardware store Mrs Lohr ke lived here with her parents who have died She was employed in the HartParr office and later as secre tary for the late H J Fitzgerald More recently she was employed in the offices of the Oliver Equipment in Omaha where Mr Lorhke was employed in the sales department Repairs Are Again Made to Courthouse in Floyc CHARLES CITY June the second time within a few months repairs are being made on the courthouse which has shown signs of collapsing in the southwest corner occupied by the county trea surers office Two large beams ex tending from the west to the east side of the office are now supported by two large iron posts installed yesterday Last winter the walls pulled away on the west side and now the ceiling shows large cracks The supervisors said they feel the county needs a new courthouse Charles City Briefs CHARLES CITY June met Burns who has been confined to his home for several months with blood poisoning has been taken to the hospital at Iowa City for med ical attention A marriage license was issued to Arnold P Niedorf and Louise C Youngerman by the clerk of court here Everett Staebler and Irma Newton of Charles City obtained a icense in Newton Among the members of the American Legion auxiliary who mo ored to Independence to attend the party for the veterans in the hospi al there given by the Floyd county units were Mrs Ben Taylor Mrs E C Sorenson Mrs Earl Anderson and Mrs W G Henke They were accompanied by Mr and Mrs Ar hur Colby Cleone Kennard Mil dred Jones and Phyllis Hennigar vho appeared on the program Representative Roy J Sours talked to the Mens Brotherhood of he Central Methodist church on the bills passed during the last legisla ture and other phases of the last A group discussion follow ed the address Mrs Fred Lebow who suffered paralysis of the legs several months igo has been moved from the Cedar Valley hospital to her home in Rice ville Mrs Eloise Merrick Bernice Lu cia and Marjorie Merrick left by motor yesterday to visit relatives in New Jersey and tour the New Eng land states W H Fairbanks was appointed a member of the Cedar dams in the Cedar river above Floyd for the purpose of creating better fishing Several members have signified their willingness to put in a few hours of labor in this project Mervin Sours secretary of
