Hunting Des perado June 21 Willie Doody cop hater and desperado treading a trail parallel ing the road the dashing quick fir ing Terrible Tommy OConnor trod had two more shootings to answer for today They call him Wee Willie be cause of his stature they call him baby face because of his soft clear complexion and the innocence of his expression But the police and federal authorities see behind the child mask Chicagos most ruthless killer and an implacable foe of men iti police uniform Already hunted for the wounding of T L Jackson ace of the Chi cago postal inspectors for the kill ing of Charles Levy chief of police of Berwyn and for the shooting1 dead last Tuesday night of Leon Raymond an Oak Park druggist Doody today was sought for the shooting and serious wounding1 6f a restaurant owner and a policeman Shoots Proprietor The latest outlawry attributed to Baby Face started last night when a gunman supposedly intend entered the restaurant of MlltonValsouopolis on the south side AS Valsouopolis approached desperado whipped out two sud fired Valsouopolis S f6rw3rd appled with his assailant as a cU3tomer seized him from the hack jtWheii the customer went out to seek apoliceman the gunmau wrenched himself free and ftsrt pausing in the doorway to fire sev eral more I shots at Valsouopolis The latter may die doctors said Reaching the street the gunman jumped into an automobile stopped by traffic lights forced the driver to get out and sped away An hour later a man answering Doodys description entered the drug store of George Denbo on tho northwest side and stole 35 Tried to Parley When Denbo tried to parley with the man the latter replied Mo back talk I just shot up a joint on the south side and Im in a hurry Ive killed a couple like you and dont want to knock off any more As the robber sped away Denbo ran out and called to Police Sergt Falk who was with his motorcycle across the street Fall passed the car within a mile I surrender the fugitive an nounced stepping out of the car at Falks command As the policeman fumbled with his holster the gunman whipped out a pistol struck Falk over the left ear with Its butt and fired two shots one of which struck Falk in the Royal Baking com pany and E W Gillett company Ltd of Canada into a concern was sent to stockholders of the companies by J P Morgan and company today Acquisition by seperate purchase of the coffee firm of Chase and San born is also part of the plan Accompanying copies of the plan mailed to stockholders was a state ment saying the board of directors of the three companies had re quested a committee composed of Thomas Cochran of J P Morgan and company Max C Fleishchmann chairman and Joseph C Wilshire Jr chairman of the Royal Baking Powder company to prepare the plan for organization of the new holding company for which no name has yet been selected The new company will have one million shares of cumulative pre 27 OF ESCAPED CONVICTS BACK Body of One Who Broke for Freedom Seen in River BRAZORIA Texas June 21 Twentyseven of the 43 convicts who escaped yesterday from Clem ens state prison farm near here had been recaptured today Mrs W M Hickman wife of the captain of the farm said the body of one convict was seen floating in the Bernard river below the farm It was not known whether the man had been drowned in attempting to swim the stream or shot by posse men combing the countryside The searchers hrought in seven escaped men during the night two of whom were seriously wounded when they attempted to flee ferred stock without par value to carry dividends at the rate of 57 a share a year It also will have twenty million shares of common stock without par value Joseph Wilshire president of Fleischmann company and one time yeast packer will be president of the new Postiim Buchanan Is JLX Vx cX vJ BesMe EMMETSBURG June 21 Charles W Buchanan 24 Seventh street southeast Mason City was found dead beside his demolished truck in a ditch about four mi its west of here at oclock this morning Footprints in the road showed that Buchanan had fallen on the left side of the truck had risen and walked into the road and had re turned to collapse on the other side of the truck His death was caused by chest injuries The tracks made by the car indi cated Buchanan had gone to sleep while driving The vcar had goca into a ditch and struck a tree on the other side The car was totally wrecked The hands of the watch carried by the dead man pointed to oclock which is thot to be the time the accident occurred Bu chanan who was an employe of Jacob F Decker and Sons of Mason City was driving a truck belonging to the packing company The motorists who discovered the body summoned Sheriff R L Shea He notified officials of the Deckel company who left immediately for Emmetsburg Buchanan is survived by his wife and a son Robert 3 years old The body has been removed to the atterson Funeral home Mason City WILL H HAYS GIVEN DIVORCE Czar of Picture Producers Wins 181 yes and 727 Jury in Liquor Case Dismissed After It Had Taken 103 Ballots SIOUX CITY June 21 able to reach a verdict after taking 103 ballots the jury which heard the case against a half dozen persons charged with conspiracy to vio late the prohibition laws as a1 re sult of a raid on the athletic club here last February was dismissed yesterday The jurors had deliberated 26 hours and said the result of the last ballot was the sameas the first Federal Judge George C Scott said he could not say whether the case would be tried again this sum mer or continued until October Forgetting the school teacher was convicted of manslaughter in connection with the death of Lorene Morris Herrin high school girl in a verdlst returned today by a cir cuit court jury Testimony was that the girl died of an illegal operation performed by Dr John P Huff of Cartersville at the instance of Larsen A deathbed statement by the yirl blaming Larsen was admitted in ev idence Dr Huff is awaiting trial on a murder charge Larsen was not sentenced pend ing arguments on a motion for a new trial set for July 8 cuit court Helen Hays yesterday from Mrs Tho divorce was granted by Judge Arthur De Baun The proceedings were conducted quietly and news of the legal separation did not be come known until today Haya was given custody of their young son William Harrison Jr The action filed some time ago y Hays was not contested by Mrs Hays She did not appear in the courtroom but was represented by Michael Foley an attorney of In dianapolis Mr Hays was represent ed by Attorneys Paul Stratton and Alonzo Owen Former Hampton Man WOMAN ADMITS FRAUD PRACTICE Mrs Myrtle Torkelson of Whittemore Fined in Federal Court WHITTEMORE June Myrtle Torkelson was fined in the federal court at Fort Dodge for using1 the mails to defraud Convic tion on the charge usually carries a five year penalty The plan ahe used was to send an order for n bill of goods to a mail order company and a check on some bank in a neighboring town The chectc would be dishonored when it was returned U S Marshal Michael Healy of Cedar Rapids and Frank Cleedy of Fort Dodge came to Whlttcmora and took her before Judge George Scott at Fort Dodge where she pleaded guilty Mrs Torkelson also known as Miss Myrtle Lansing is 22 yeara old She married Mr Torkelson at Algoua two years ago but never lived with him securing1 a divorce this spring at Humboldt She has been making her home with tlie Henry Juchem family east of Whit temore Mrs Torkelson admitted having been arrested once before on a rubber check charge In DCS j Moines and when a sheriff from that city visited her she settled the SPANISH FLYER ON FIRST LEG OF N Y FLIGHT Maj Ramon Franco Heads for Azores on Way to America Spain June 21 if Ramon Franco cele brated Spanish aviator who flew across the south Atlantic in 1926 took off here today at p m a m C S T for the Azores Islands on the first lap of a flight to New York Major Franco took off with three companions The Spanish flyers are scheduled to make their first stop at the Azores which they should reach by a m Saturday Mad rid time A M S T Major Franco will spend the day at the Azores He plans to take off for New York at 6 p m Sat urday 31 A M C S T The flight will be direct to New York if weath er conditions are favorable If not a stop will probably be made at Halifax N S The greatest secrecy was main tained and only a small amount of information regarding the flight was given out Major Franco said he hoped to fly directly to New York from the Azores and then fly back to Northern Spain making the en tire journey in eight days The plane used by the flyers was a DornierWahl monoplane carry ing two HispanoSuiza motors o 600 horsepower each They carriec a radio having a range of about 2000 miles and enough gasoline for a 22 hour flight Major Franco planned to communicate by radio Girl Threatened to Slay Wife and Daughter Says Ohioan pOLUMBUS Ohio June 21 The confession of Dr James H Snook 49 dismissed Ohio State university professor that he killed 5 year old Thcora Hix his pupil taramour was ready for the county rand jury today just one week rom the day the girl was beaten and slashed to death He killed her ic said because she threatened the ife of his wife and child The confession announced midnight by County Prosecutoi John J Chester Jr was held for the grand jury with Chesters pre diction that a first degree murder ndictment would be returned be fore evening Bringing to an end 23 hours o jruelling examination Snook los he iron nerve that had carried hin plane which regularly makes the trip to Minneapolis from Kansas City in the forenoon Their flying time was SO minutes This afternoon they left on the same plane on its southward trip to Des Moines and Kansas City Distances Arc Shortened This new service will put Mason City within a dayand a half of Los Angeles by iir and greatly reduca the railroad traveling time for those who fly to Kansas City Actual traveling time is reduced from CO hours by railroad to 16 hours in the event one wishes to travel by air from Kansas City to the coast as well as from Mason City to the Missouri city The
