Associated Full Wires No 112 Algerians oust Ha Bouemedienne takes power Exleaders whereabouts unknown ALGIERS AP President Ahmed Ben Bella was over thrown in a predawn coup detat Saturday and a revolu tionary council headed by Col Houari Bouemedienne chief of the armed forces assumed all power A statement read over the government radio Algiers said Ben Bella would meet the fate of all despots The radio did not give any in dication as to Ben Bellas whereabouts Boumedienno signed the ra dio announcement in the name of the revolutionary council The statement declared that all personal power had been taken from Ben Bella and that Algeria would continue to honor all previous agreements and commitments with other coun tries Troops and tanks stood guard at strategic points in Algiers several hours before the an nouncement and armed soldiers took up posts outside the resi dences of Ben Bella and other government officials The councils statement went on to denounce the reckless consequences of personal pow er and said that the Algerian internal situation is anguish ing This it said was a result of the exercise of personal pow er The power of state was in the hands of one man it said The announcement came after the French charge daffaires Louis Dauge reported that Ab del Aziz Bouteflika foreign minister under Ben Bella wel comed him in the name of the new government Bouteflika told him the new government would continue co operation with France and as sured him of personal security for all French citizens Dauge reported The sprawling port city was calm Algerians had been pre pared for something big Be fore dawn troops took up sta tions around strategic points in the city and around the resi dence of the presi dent Radio Algiers cautioned its listeners to await an important announcement Then the statement denounc ing Ben Bella and establishing a revolutionary council to di rect Algerias affairs was read Ben Bella had been in eco nomic trouble and accused by the Ber bers in the Kabylie Mountains of making dangerous use of personal power Ben Bella has fought per sistent economic ills and politi cal dissension since he took of fice as president in September 1963 He has oriented his country to the Communist bloc and main tains close relations with both Red China and the Soviet Union This week Ben Bella an nounced that the Berbers and the government had agreed to end hostilities In the recent past this has been confined to minor encounters Ben Bella commuted a death sentence imposed on Berber leader Hocine Ait Ahmed to life imprisonment Ait Ahmed was Ben Bellas cellmate when the two were im Flood toll 17 in Southwest DENVER UP With Colorado still bearing most of the brunt muddy cloudburstfed rivers and streams spread damage through vast portions of the Rocky Mountain States and part of the Southwest Saturday Seventeen persons throughout the ravaged area are known to have died in the flooding or for reasons directly attributable to floods Unconfirmed reports in Colorado indicate that at least 11 other persons are missing in flooded parts of the state One such report said five members of the Man ual Guajardo faiiiily were swept away
