Caudle Convicted Talks at Lehigh Opened Construction to Resume Negotiations were under way Thursday afternoon in an at tempt to iron out contract dif ftcultics between the cement workers union and the strike bound Lehigh Portland Cement in Mason City Meanwhile the cement union Local 106 United Cement Lime and Gypsum Workers Interna tional agreed to with draw pickets from one of the plant gates so that construction workers may enter Jack Matthews general super intendent of the WalshJohnson Construction said Thursday that workers will return to the million expansion program at the plant Monday morning Davey and Moen construction crews working on a new bridge over the Winnebago River for the cement plant also planned to re turn to work Monday They have been off the job since the strike will start ex actly one week after the cement workers started picketing the Mason City plant Earnie Ward president of the local union said the negotiation session was set up by Hall Both management and the union sat tight the past week until the gov ernment mediator came into the strike picture Union pickets closed down pro duction at the vast cement plant last Thursday after negotiations for a new contract broke down Construction workers on the 512 million plant expansion refused to cross the picket lines and all work at the plant came to stand still Contract Difficulties The union and management have agreed on an 18 cent an hour wage increase The union wants the increase and new insurance benefits retroactive to May 1 The union also wants a training and testing program established by the company abolished Ward said he thought the union committee would go along with the management if they got a fair obvious This comes under the heading of immediate Moyer estimated the proposed salary increase for the patrols 225 men and 23 drivers license examiners would cost for the rest of this biennium ending June 30 1957 He said that amount will be asked from the Iowa Legislative Interim Committee at its next meeting at Rockwell City next Tuesday Included in the total is about representing the cost of operating oneman patrol cars at night and financing the patrols two new
