Nelson A Rockefellers blast at Vice President Richard M Nixon brought chortles of joy Thursday from Democrats From Nixon there was for the moment only silence It brought a variety of responses in Washington Most Republicans in Congress rallied behind Nixon a few agreed with the New York governor Among the questions asked was why did Rockefeller make such a statement at this late date particularly when he read himself out of the race for the Republican presidential nomina tion last December Some observers said Rocke fellers carefully written state ment sounded like a political partys campaign platform Was it Rockefellers intention to try to mould the GOP platform in Nixon in control of GOP Three out of four support his candidacy By KENNETH FINK Princeton Research Service PRINCETON N J Vice President Richard Nixon holds an impressive fivetoone edge over any other candidate for the GOP presidential nomination among rank and file Republi cans Todays check on 1960 Repub lican candidates for president shows Nixon with more than three out of four Republicans in his camp Only 15 in each 100 of all Republicans questioned in the survey would like to see Gov Nelsen Rockefeller get the GOP nomination Todays findings would thus seem to indicate no disposition on the part of Republicans to swing to Governor Rockefeller AMONG vot ers questioned in todays sur vey Nixon leads Rockefeller his nearest rival by a margin of twotoone Nixon is preferred by one out of every two inde pendents whereas Rockefeller currently receives one out of every four 24 per cent of
