line By ROBERT 1RVIN DETROIT UPDThe annual model change a tradition in the American auto industry is being eliminated by the truckmaking division of one major care manu facturer The Dodge division of Chrysler Corp said the move was base on a justconcluded threeyear study of buyer and dealer opinion in the truck field Philip N Buckminister Dodge assistant general manager said running technical improvements in trucks will be made as they are developed through the calendar year This policy he said will pro vide truck owners with greater benefits more rapidly and will eliminate the need for traditional fall annual model and styling changes Dodge cars wont be affected by the policyIn fact the Dodge and ChryslerPlymouth car have drastic styling changes for 1963 so drastic many of the models will be un recognizable from 1962 counter 1paits The yearly model change is unique to this jcountry European carmakers keep the same basic designs for years before chang ing them The classic example is the German Volkswagen which has looked the same for over 25 years i The American how ever regards the ahriualTchange as necessary One engineer said he believes a customer must be able to see or feel an improve ment and that the industry does make improvements each year Another said it was not ridiculously to change a cars appearance while revamp ing to accommodate engineering modificationsActually its been estimated to cost million to change just the grille on one car line Many styling features changed yearly actually serve a useful pur pose The chrome strip on the side of a car originated as a buffer against minor dents It still serves that purpose but also exchanges the styling Car body shells are usually changed every three orfour years In between grilles side trim and rear ends are modified One firm which has made few changes is American Motors But even its Rambler line will get a facelifting this year as will most other cars In the case oE Dodge1 truck Buckminister said our new plan will give us greater flexibility and will allow us to adopt mor quickly to the changing needs o the many differing kinds of and growing truck operations Instead of
