of the whole peninsula The enthusiasm which greeted announcement of Mussolinis res ignation and Badoglios appoint ment was tremendous throughout Italy Demonstrations formed in every major Italian city where march ers of all classes massed in the public squares and cheered Ba doglio and hotted il duce and fascism Fascist uniforms vanished from the streets of northern Italy and fascist emblems were popularity BOMBER FALLS AT SIOUX CITY 2 Die and 1 0 Leap to Safety in Parachutes SIOUX CITY of the Sioux City air base said two men were killed and 10 others parachuted to safety early Tues day when a heavy army bomber on a routine training flight from the Rapid City S Dak air base crashed near Sioux City At least one of those who bailed out was injured Lt Stew art H Jones Sioux City air base public relations officer said Names of the two killed were be ing withheld by army officials until the next of kin are notified The crash happened four and a half miles southeast of the Sioux City air PRESS German propagandists began to talk about the invulnerability ot Crete Tuesday praising its de fenses as they did those of Sicily a few weeks before the illiecl in vasion A transoccan broadcast recorded by the Associated Press asserted that Crete at any mo ment can be turned into an active volcano of gigantic ferocity The German news agency Rave as its authority a nari war reporter named Hans Adolf Weber The Svenska Dagbladet dis patch also said that German Am bassador Hans Geoxg Victor von Mackensen was holding a series of talks with Premier Badoglio apparently to learn the lattcrs atitude toward Germany While Badoglio has not yet of ficially proclaimed the lascisi party dead thenew premier and hisministers Are cleaning house throughout the nation The fas cist party headquarters have been taken over Benito Mussolini anc other high fascists are reported under protective custody and th national police force has been re organized under a military ad ministration according to downfall Direct news dispatches from Italy have been halted but j Italian newspapers reaching Switzerland disclosed the scope Knox Expects Near Future Development WASHINGTON Knox said Tuesday that develop ments in Italy indicate some at tempts to take that country out of the war in the reasonably near future The navy secretary told his press conference that he had no exclusive information on the situation but that it was his estimate that the appearance of things indicates probably some attempt at taking Italy out of the war He was asked whether he meant an attempt by King Emanuele and
