Operation Alert Tar Ahead of Last Years Defense Test EMERGENCY PRESS HEAD QUARTERS Operation Alert The western hemispheres biggest civil defense drill Operation Alert 1956 was reported far ahead of last year in efficiency by one of the men running it Defense Mobilization Director Arthur S Flemming said Satur day a number of rough spots re main to be ironed Operation Alert now in its sec ond day convention here Friday After adopting a broadlyworded campaign platform some delegates and proxies selected Ray H Thompson Newton as the Republican candidate for commerce commissioner Thompson 63 nearing retirement as traffic manager for Maytag was nominated on the first ballot against the same two opponents he met in the primary election when he ran third Former commissioner B Richardson DCS Moines led in primary balloting but failed to get the required 35 per cent of the vote sending the nomination to convention The other candi date was H M Reed Panora mayor A county by roll call gave Thompson an announced votes to for Reed and 208 for Richardson A tola of 685 was required A motion to make the selection unanimous then was approved quickly Thc partys 17plank platform offered by the granddaughter Nancy Dall 8 who was riding with them es caped with only minor injuries She was taken to Mason City Fri day night Mr Dull was born Dec 8 1884 at Northwood He had lived in Mason City many She then rep resented the state in Miss Amer ica judging at Atlantic City N but lost out in preliminary competition When Miss Morris took Misu U S A honors Wednesday she said she had wished upon a star and Friday night she had an other good luck charm working for her Her father the Rev LaVerne Morris Ottumwa Iowa who flew in earlier in the day with his wife disclosed that for tha past three weeks he has been carrying a penny in the toe of his shoe I found it on the said And at the same instant a picture of Carol flashed in my mind I wanted to keep it separate from my other change so I
