Alabama Gov George C Wallaces with drawal as an independent can didate for president By JACK BELL WASHINGTON AP Ala bamas Gov George C Wal laces abandonment of an inde pendent presidential effort invit ed Sen Barry Gold water Mon day to pursue an alllheway conservative drive aganst Pres ident Johnson When Wallace announced Sun day lie was giving up the effort to gel his name on presidential ballots in 16 or more states he removed a serious obstacle to Gold waters chances of carrying several Southern states in the November battle with Johnson Wallace appeared on CBS Face the Nation The action offered the Repub lican presidential nominee some possible rewards in Dixie if he maintains his conservative course that would have to be weighed against what he might gain elsewhere if he yielded to intraparty pressure to swing toward the middle of the road Rep William E Miller of New York the vice presidential nom inee indicated he would like to sec some overtures to the par tys moderates and liberals in the Northern industrial states that would bring them around to active support of the national ticket But Miller said in response to questions on NBCs Meet the Press that failure to get the backing of such men as Sens Jacob K Javits and Kenneth B Keating of New York Hugh Scott of Pennsylvania and Clif ford P Case of New Jersey wont be fatal Goldwatcr said in Phoenix Ariz he thinks he will do well in New York and Pcnnsylvana in November Miller said he favors a sum mit meeting of Republican lead ers of all shades of opinion to canvass the prospects for the campaign and o give their ad vice on strategy Goldwatcr who returned to Washington Monday after a weekend in Phoenix said dur ing the California primary cam paign in June he intended to call such a session He North Iowa Aviation Day lived up to its expectations Sunday as an estimated 45000 people turned their eyes to thc skies in near 100dcgree heat Although Ihe three main fea tures the Blue Angels the Gol den Knights and Bevo Howard all appeared previously at Av iation Day programs this was the first time they appeared to gcthcr The everpopular Blue Angels thc Navy flight demonstration team led off the program with their five F11A Tiger fighters Barely making it off the cnc of Ihe 5600foot runway short for this type aircraft thc An gels provided one of the most colorful highlighls of Aviation Day It furnished by Marine Corps Reservists in Minneapolis crowd as they crisscrossed the airport in lowflying intricate maneuvers The Angels painted a colorful pattern for spectators as they traveled upward in a unit leav ing trails of red white and blue smoke set against a deep blue sky dotted with a few clouds Completing the flcur c lis or burst of the blue pattern the Angels suddenly dispersed in five different directions directly to the southof the air port terminal The target for the sky divers was just soull of the eastwest runway Some of the parachutists made their mark Others landed on the other side of the runway Jumping out of the planes the Knights hurled earthward at speeds up to 211 miles an hour leaving a red smoke trail The black and gold parachutes slowly opened The chutists
