their party ticket Jate Friday for election of two members of the State Commerce Commission The Republican state conven tion picked Lloyd R Smith 46 Forest a state gasoline tax auditor as running mate in the November election for Commis lioner John Ropes nomination of Smith by a 1629 to 972 delegate vote over Frank B Means Manilla fol lowed adoption of a platform for the 1958 campaign highlighted by the sales tax issue SMITH AND MEANS were two of seven candidates in the June primary who failed to receive Russ Cast Veto in Council Assembly to Be Called AP Photofax the required majority percent age of the vote to win the nomina tion thus leaving it to the conven tion Only Ropes polled enough votes in the primary to win a place on the ballot The third commissioner Ray Thompson Newton is a holdover member The other primary candidates including Commissioner John A Tallman sought the convention nomination but the choice was between Smith and Means Smith served in the Navy dur ing World War II is married and the father of five children Smith had the support of Commissioner Thompson in the convention while delegates heard T ep o rts that Ropes IN NOVEMBER Ropes and Smith will be opposed by the Democratic nominees Harold E Hughes Ida Grove and Bernard J Martin Des Moines The convention delegates mean while failed to make a flat recommendation for a three per cent state sales tax a part of the partys general election campaign platform W G Murray nominee for gov ernor campaigned successfully for the GOP nomination on a three per cent sales tax plank The sales tax resolution submit ted by the committee for con vention consideration said mere ly We believe that the sales tax is the most feasible source for any additional revenue IN THAT RESPECT the com mittee said there is a necessity for property tax relief and that the state income tax should not be used as a major source of add ed revenue for the state Murray has advocated increas ing the sales tax from the pres ent two to three per cent and us ing the extra cent for property tax relief and state aid to school Among the other many planks recommended by the committee was one which asked that mem bers of the State Commerce Com mission be appointive rather than elective Another recommended immedi ate action for legislative reap portionment and membership in one house be based on area and membership in the other MasonCity police Saturday that his station wagon and money were taken fromhim at gunpoint by a hitchhiker hepicked uprat Nora Springs Robinson traveling to Mason City on Highway 18 said the rob bery occurred about two mileswest ofNora Springs Tvhen he stopped at the hitchhikers Robinson outside the car to look at a low tire Then Robinson reported the man drew a gun on him took his money and drove on toward Mason City in the station wagon after giving Robinson orders to start walking down the road About in cash and to in checks were taken Robinson hailed a policeman in the east edge of Mason City after he had caught a ride that far with a passing driver He told officershis story and police broadcast the report to the Belmond state police radio station and to the Albert Lea and Austin issue FOREST CITY At a special election here Friday voters passed by a 78 per cent majority a bond issue for for con struction of a municipal swim ming pool The vote was 724160 in favor of the proposal In a similar election in 1950 a swimming pool project was rejected 703369 At that time the proposed bond was to have been The city council has set aside a reserve fund of which will be added to the bond for the construction of the pool Mayor Roy Schram said Friday it will take about a month to com plete legalities for the sale of the bonds It is hoped that contracts can be let soon after that time and construction started in the fall so the pool will be ready for the 1959 swimming season The location has not yet been determined It will be on one of three sites owned by the city
