a 26896pound payload into orbit roused speculation Saturday that the Russians are testing a super booster for a manned moon shot The new space station called Protoni was lofted Friday First reports said it was the big gest payload ever hurled into space But Tass indicated that the boosting rocket was the key factor in the experiment The American Titan 3C rocket with a thrust of 265 million pounds orbited a satellite with a dummy payload weighing about 21000 pounds last month The US satellite was at tached to the second stage of the rocket bringing the ttoal weight to 32347 pounds The two sections separated after six hours American scientists noted however that the Soviet satel lite had no rocket attached They estimated that if a rocket had been attached the total weight would have been about 40000 pounds A British spaceexpert said in Londonrthere was little doubt that the new Soviet rocket is intended for spacecraft capable of sending men to the moon Kenneth Gatland vice presi Fritchel Robert Lumley A 22yearold Mason City woman and a 25yearold Hamp ton man died as the result of injuries received when Uie car in which they were riding crashed off Highway 65 just north of the Mason City limits Saturday morning Killed were Mrs Karen Marie Staley Fritchel 22 207 E State and Robert Red Clair Lumley 25 Hampton Mrs Fritchel was killed instantly and Lumley died later Saturday morning at a Mason City hospital as the result of severe head injuries received in the crash The accident was investigated by Dr Alfred Herlilzka Cerro Gordo County medical examin cr Mahlon Pelham Iowa High way Patrol and Jerry Koerber Cerro Gordo County dcputj sheriff Officers said the car driven by Mrs Fritchel was apparent ly traveling south and left th highway after negotiating the curve at the American Crystal Sugar Co The auto left the road about 200 feet southeast of the curve and traveled 156 feet before crashing into a tree on the north side of the highway The going to be shed in
