equals the figure for May serious crime is shown to have decreased in the city according to the monthly re port submitted to P F Hopkins city manager by Chief of Police Frank Sanford The total number of Queeu Elizabeth wrote God Almighty first planted a garden and indeed it is the purest of human pleasures It is the greatest refreshment to the spirits of man without which build ings and palaces are but gross han diworks Who has not felt after a little time spent in a garden this refresh ment of spirit this renewal of trtxn quillty and courage Gardens should be increased everywhere they are as necessary to the hum blest home as to a mansion as great refreshment of spirit can be found in working over a little plot of poppies and pansies and sweet peas as in gardening in a land scaped acre We hear much nowadays of the speed and pressure of life and with each added modern improvemcnl and labor saving device we seem to find less time to live our lives as we should like to Jive them Only in the garden can we find relief from the growing activity and fever of mod ern life Fragrance In the Garden When we plan our gardens let us plan for the blending of fragrance as well as color We all know uow at a whiff of some long forgotien fragrance the years will seem to he wiped out and we are back at somo lost hour perhaps of childhood The Wending of perfumes so that CT tain sensations can be awakened is a very subtle art and an interesting one for the amateur to practice Goes A Long Ways to Make Friends MULLIGAN SONS ri Ford town sedan ATOOin T Phone US St J Hansen R F D No 4 Mason tract the butterflies and birds Oladiolas salvia beebalm and such deep throated flowers will bring the humming birds those dazzling iiy namic bits of color ana energy Goldfinches like catnip If you have a cat put a bell on her ana the seeds of bachelor buttons and columbine To see Mr Goldfinch in his bright yellow and black summer suit accompanied by his slightly less brilliantly clothed wife feeding in a patch of blue bachelor buttom and pouring out little trilling soiga between bites is a sight and sound to gladden even a bright summer morning A great many birds like the seeds of sunflowers so if we can let a lew go to seed in some corner of the garden we will be furnishing a quick free lunch stand for the birJs until long after frost An Aid to aiemory A garden note book kept frrn year to year is a great aid in plan ning the garden One that has been found very useful Is kept in the form of a diary In which entries are made every week or two listingthe flowers that are in bloom at that period and keeping notes of any es pecially happy plantings that have been observed and also any parti cularly unhappy ones A garden note hook haa recently been adopted by one local gardener of several years experience who planted lav ender iris red Oriental poppies and orange elegans lily near each other expecting them to bloom in succes sion only to have them all in flow er together the popples being in their prime and the iris not quite gone when the lilies came on KegTil Lilies The regal lily ts now swinging un lovely chalices in many gardens in Mason City The name Regal doesnt neem to he as fitting as might be for while she ie indeed queenly In her beauty yet there is nothing of pampered royalty in her demands She will grow under al most any garden conditions and there seems surely to be something of the common people in her adap tibility end willingness to make the best of things as she finds them All she asks is well drained soil and plenty of sun and air The stalk of the Regal lily seems rather thin and fragile and until the miracle hap pens one can hardly believe that it could support many white trumpets of bloom trumpets flushed on Uie outside with pink and inside soad ingto yellow in the throat of the bloom E H Wilson surely brot the world a wonderful gift when he came out of China some 20 years ago with the first precious Rcga1 lily bulbs which he had found growing wild In certain bleak val leys in Thibot and brot out of the mountains and across the desert at the cost of what would have bcpn tn many of us unendurable hard ships Hollyhock Season This seems to be an especially good year for hollyhocks Here Is another flower which requires no pampering and will grow under nl most any conditions Stately spires of hollyhocks with their wealth of color and decorative habit of growth are now adding much beputy to the jardens of town anl country alike Crimes for gain Other felonies Misdemeanors law violations intoxication Traffic law violations Investigation For other departments Total arrests Patrol cars covered 13988 miles during June and 14484 miles during May 22 Identification Made Fingerprint records taken num bered 85 of which state national or local bureaus made 22 identifica tions The number taken in May was 85 of which 57 identifications were made There were 35 persons j photographed each month Doors and windows
