Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - July 9, 1964, Mason City, Iowa Senators wrestle in hall Friendly match held WASHINGTON un Sens Strom Thurmond DSC and Ralph W Yarborough DTcx engaged in a wrestling match on the marble floor of a Senate office building corridor Thurs day over a question of whether to attend a committee meeting The affair began as a friendly scuffle with Yarborough at tempting to persuade Thurmond to enter the committee room ami make a quorum to consider a nomination the South Carolin ian was opposing Finally the two men both and active in the Army Re serves agreed to the wrestling match with the understanding Thurmond would enter the meeting room if he lost and that Yarborough would remain out side if he lost Thurmond appeared to be winning when the contest was vention city Thursday and was greeted by a noisy gathering of backers In a brief speech he told the group that this is going to be a GOP year Goldwater proclaimed this as the year the Republicans win aid his legal fight Only today a businessman walked in with Lester Maddox said Its not primarily merchants whore sending in money but theyre the ones whove got the most to lose by integrating Maddox
