CASSELS United Press international John and Ellen Jones are ac tivechurch members They get up early every Sunday to bring their three children to the family worship service at the SuburbanHeights Presby terian Church John was raised a Baptist anc Ellen grew up in the Episcopa church But they joined the Pres byterian church when they movec into their new neighborhood be cause it is close to their home and most of their childrens play mates go to Sunday School there They have become in their pas tors favorite phrase deeply in volved in the life of their congre gation John is an usher and was chairman of the Every Member Canvass last fall Ellen teaches a Sunday School class and never says no when shes asked to help with a church supper or a bake sale RECENTLY ONE of the Jones children was seriously injured in an accident The pastor joined John and Ellen in their anxious vigil at the hospital It was the first time he had had occasion to talk with them on a deeper level than polite conversation about life and death and the meaning of the Christian faith He was startled to discover that John did not beheve in life after death and that Ellen was strongly attached to the idea of reincar nation Neither of them had more than a vague conception of the Christian teaching about resur rection and eternal life The Joneses are not an actual couple They are a composite of 1000 typical American Protestant families whose religious attitudes were studied in a fouryear na tionwide survey initiated by the United Presbyterian Church in the U S A The people covered by this sur vey were mostly young or middle aged They were not casual mem bers on the fringe of parish life They were unusually faithful in church attendance and willing workers in all kinds of congrega tional activities IN SUCH A group if anywhere one would expect to find thorough knowledge and profound personal commitment to the essential doc trines of the Christian faith But the researchers encountered ture and
