lifeterm convict who killed two sheriffs deputies and a bystander Thursday in a dar ing escape in Marianna Fla was shot to death in a gunbattle near here nearly 100 miles away by police who cornered him at a house A 15yearold boy held hostage by the convict escaped withoul injury A Georgia State Highway Pa trolman Mas critically wounded in the wild chase that ended with the death of squat 240 pound Melvin A Weaver who shot his way out of a hospital in Marianna Fla Weaver who was revived by oxygen in Marianna when he was overcome by smoke when he set fire to his jail bunk seized a family of three in Mar ianna and fled into South Geor gia after shooting the two depu ties and the bystander at the hospital He released the three mem bers of the family near Colquitt Ga and headed north tow an Albany in the familys T Near Smithville Ga abou 80 miles northeast of Marianna Georgia highway patrolmen in stopped and seized Ricky Hale as a hostage Weaver drove slowly through Smithville still heading north with a pistol at the head Ricky was one of three boy walking along the highway when Weaver stopped suddenly an ordered him into the car Three miles north of Amcri cus about 115 miles south o Atlanta Weaver suddenl dashed to the front porch of house still holding the 15year old hostage Scores of Georgia state pa trolmen county and city police men swarmed into the area t surround the house Weaver was armed with tw 38 caliber police pistols seizec from the two slain deputies a Marianna and at least two othe pistols seized from two Georgia officers whose car was taken during his States celebrated its 187th Independence Day Thurs day with fireworks parades and family outings The original cry of Let freedom ring echoed strongly this year in demonstra tions for equal rights for Negroes This years celebration inaugu rated an effort to ring all the bells in every city town and ham let President Kennedy endorsed the movement Let freedom called for all bells to toll at noon CST Thursday of slander med dling and aggravating relations on he eve of their peace talks in Moscow A statement by the Soviet Com munist party Central Committee said another Chinese attack on So viet policy Monday showed the Chinese do not want discontinua tion of the polemics and settle ment of the existing differences The committee said it had de cided to reply publicly in the in terests of shedding the right light on the points of difference The committee statement pub lished in the party newspaper Pravda was the bluntestMoscow has issued against the Chinese While the Chinese have been punching directly the Soviets have been claiming to be abiding by an agreement to avoid open polemics Talks with the Chinese would begin Friday as scheduled siiid the Soviet party But the Soviets hinted that the international Com munist conference demanded by the Chinese is not in sight The Soviet party pledged rt would strive at the talks for the creation of a propitious atmos phere Its statement charged the Chi nese interfered in the internal af fairs of our party when they dis tributed in Moscow copies of the June 14 letter from the Chinese party attacking Premier Khrush chev and listing points Peking wants discussed at the Moscow talks This the Soviets said grossly violated the regulations in force in the USSR swing West Germany into line with his policy Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and Vice Chancellor Ludvig Ernard greeted De Gaulle and he top men of his Cabinet at Wahn Airport But the em phasis was on the business nature of the visit and fewer than 100 spectators turned out for the arrival Kennedy drew 5000 to the airport We arc going to work for the good of our countries and for peace in Europe said De Gaulle in an arrival statement We will do fruitful work for peace in Europe said Adenauer Chancellor Konrad Adenauer joined Kennedy in a communique which appeared to endorse Amer ican aims for a unified Europe including Britain Jinked with the United Stales and per petuation of the North Alantic al liance as the primary vehicle of Western defense The communique appeared to challenge De Gaulles dream of a continental West European bloc dominated by France and West Germany with France as senior partner and Britain excluded un til it is ready to accept French leadership De Gaulle did not appear to have much chance of getting West Germany to accept his design For one thing the West Ger mans have shown they believe the United States offers them more protection against the Soviet Un ion Bulletin MOLINE HI UPI A member of an Iowa skydiv ing team was killed and three other persons were injured Thursday when their plane crashed on takeoff in a rain storm from the quadcities airport Authorities were un able to identify the dead or injured freedom and his 121st birth day He doesnt look it Theres a twinkle inhis eye and a in his step that would be envied by many men 50 years younger He doesnt wear glasses his hear ing is good and his mind is as agile as the gazelles of his na tive Africa And though hes 56 years beyond Social Security age Charlie Smith hasnt complete ly retired yet He sells soft drinks and candy bars in a oneroom Bartow last December Charlie was still cooking his own meals la Si aft A CHARLIE SMITH his present home though he doesnt have a stove so he eats most of his meats out often with his son Chester Smith a block and a half away Charlies life has been as varied as it is long Since he was kidnaped from Liberia by a slave ship at the age of 12 he has been a slave rancher horse breederroad builder turpentine farmer citrus picker and sideshow attraction He recalls that the slave ship docked at New Orleans and he was sold at auction to Charles Smith a rancher from Galveston Tex My boss gave me his name I told him how old I was and where I was born and he wrote it all down in the family Bible along with the rest of his family Charlie Smith now while talking of the Texan who took him home 109 years ago sometimes calls him dad sometimes my boss Charlie has been married three times but his son Ches ter is his only child Charlie was about 60 when Chester was born For another Adenauer is retirw ing this fall and the men who will succeed him have shown more sympathy toward admission of Britain to the continental family and continued close links with the United States than toward a Eu ope dominated by France In attempting to counteract the ffect of Kennedys visit DC laulle concentrated on the West German leadership and made no attempt to match the American residents enthusiastic
