Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - January 30, 1964, Mason City, Iowa Ranger eyes launched success CAPE KENNEDY UPI The U S Thursday installed a cameracarrying Ranger probe in an orbit ing station in space then shot it outward on a planned 240000 mile trip to take the first closeup pictures of the moon A silvery AtlasAgena rocket seeking the na tions second space triumph in two days boosted the 804pound Ranger into a parking orbit around earth after blasting off at am CST About 25 minutes later as it soared 115 miics above the Indian Ocean the Agena rocket was re started in an attempt to push the speed of the sci entific package to 23800 miles per to carry it all the way to the moon The Federal Space Agency said that tracking in formation from ground stations indicated that Ranger was where it should be on the long loop ing flight toward the moon This indicated the Agena second stage had fired for the second time as planned Jet propulsion laboratories JPL said that as far as we are concerned the spacecraft is on a normal course and has separated It was this nations first moonshot in 15 months and if everything went as planned Ranger would provide a barrage of closeup photographs as it dived to a crash landing on the moons surface early Sunday morning It would end a frustrating series of 14 previous failures in as many attempts at the moon which has corne to be regarded as this countrys most elusive target in space The Soviet Union has scored two moonshot successes both in 1959 Scientists said the Ranger journey would take about 66 hours The launching which came 24 hours after Amer ica fired a Saturn1 super rocket into space and laid claim to world leadership in rocket power was an ambitious one designed to help scientists start find ing landing places on the moon for future astronauts Still ahead for the probe were several critical maneuvers including a planned attempt about 17 hours after liftoff to steer on a more direct course This called for ground stations to fire signals that would turn on control jets aboard Ranger correct ing any errors in its trajectory In the last hour of the flight technicians hoped to turn on their remote controls again and aim Ran gers six television cameras downward toward the lunar surface The probe was equipped to snap up to 3000 photographs and relay them back to earth before its death in the crash landing The launching came 24 hours after U S scien tists shot a giant Saturn1 super rocket into orbit and claimed world supremacy in rocket power The 10story AtlasAgena climbed smoothly from its launching pad atop a pillar of brilliant red flame and smoke Within 30 seconds it streaked through lowhanging clouds 4000 feet up and began a delicate curving arc down the Atlantic missile range Ninety seconds after liftoff the rocket climbed through the fringes of space and left a brilliant white vapor trail The space agency said at that point the trajectory looks good After burning for a little more than two min utes the Atlas booster engine was cutoff and sep arated Looking for Echo Echo II will pass over twice Thursday at pm and pm first from a southerly direction and then from the west southwest
