Plant of Cali fornia Oil Company Explodes FRESNO Cal Jan 30 An explosion today cckecl the new 5500000 absorption plant of the Pe troleum Securities company in Ket lleman Hillu oil field south of here killing one man and apparently trapping foulothers in the flaming ruins At least two other men were injured An explosion in a tank within the works started the fire The flames spread as burning oil from the tank splattered thru the plant Rescuers started into the ruins after the first blast but the explos ion of a second tank drove them back preventing them from recov ering the body of Charles L Phil lips foreman of the plant crew who was killed Fire fighters said bodies of the four missing men apparently were in the ruinsIntense heat prevented fire fighters from operating Three other tanks Jan 30 Three men were killed three criti cilly injured and one loss seriously hurt in a premature explosion of dynamite on a railroad construction job in this city today All were members of a railroad construction gang on the Chesapeake and Ohio railroad The bodies of Beech A Wellman Charles Scott and a man whose last name was Conlcy were removed from the debris The men were engaged in shoot ing ordered favorably reported the Williamson bill to transfer the prohibition en forcement bureau from the treasury to the justice department with amendments The measure was amended to permit the treasury department to issue permits for the withdrawal of industrial alcohol under regulations to be prescribed by the attorney general Under the original provision the secretary of the treasury and the attorney general would have drawn up the regulations jointly The bill also was amended to change the name of the new bureau of industrial alcohol and narcotics under the treasury to the bureau of industrial alcohol This action was taken Chairman Williamson of the committee said in order to prepare a way for the other measures now under consideration for the setting up of a separate bureau to
