violate the prohibition laws in four gigantic rum rebely lions in western states Alleged liquor rings in Idaho Wyoming Oklahoma and Texas were objects of the governmental drive Trial of 102 persons accused of conspiracy was to be started today in federal district court in City while trial of 23 including for mer state law enforcement commis sioner W C Irving was continued in Cheyenne Wyo Gov Frank C Emerson appeared as a witness in Cheyenne yesterday and former Gov Henry S Johnston was sub poenaed to testify in the Oklahoma City case A federal grand jury in Galveston adjourned yesterday A modified form of city managership has been adopted by Charles City with the passing by the city coun cil of an ordinance creating the office of city manager and prescrib ing his duties City managership can be achieved under one section of the code thru an election but the plan used by the city under what is called city man agership by ordinance is said to be well suited to smaller municipali ties Under it the city has a right thru its council to place the manager in charge of certain departments and reserve other departments for other officials and in the present instance under the socalled short form the new manager will have charge of all work and improvements in the streets and alleys sewers and public grounds and buildings of the city and take over the work of the street commissioner having full authority over all employes placed under his jurisdiction The salary is fixed by ordinance at a month bub the city council reserves the right to change it at any time J H administration at the State University of Iowa has re sulted in the canceling of the bas ketball game here between Gildner brothers and a group of athletes from the university It was to have taken in two af ter going aground yesterday were rescued this afternoon The vessel is a total loss HEARINGS OVER REPEAL OF RUM LAW SCHEDULED Measures Are to Come Before Judiciary Group Feb 12 WASHINGTON Jan 20 Chairman Graham of the house judiciary committee announced to day that hearings would begin be fore his group Feb 12 on seven mea sures for the repeal of the eighteenth amendment This will be the first time since the enactment of the eighteenth amendment that such a course has been taken by the ju ciary committee Many efforts have been made by the wet bloc in the house to have hearings opened on measures to re peal the amendment but heretofore they have failed The announcement was made after the move by some congression al wets looking to a concentrated drive for 275 per cent beer had een Webster City Engineer on Witness Stand for P G and E of heavy infiltration i into the Mason City sewer sys tem featured the evidence in John Kelroys action for flood damages from the Peoples Gas and Elec tric company Wednesday The chief witness was Clare H Currie of the Currie Engineering com pany Webster City who made an investigation of the sewage dis posal system of the city in 192S Mr Currie in answer to ques tions concerning his qualifications stated he was a former president of the Iowa Engineering society and now chairman of the board of engineer examiners He had de signed among numerous other dis posal systems the one recently built at the J E Decker and Sons company plant Infiltration Heavy Mr Currie who was questioned by Park Chamberlain of Anamosa defendant attorney gave detailed facts concerning the amount of in filtration into the sanitary sewers at various sections and particuarly along the Willow Creek main He had estimated the total infiltra tion into the Willow creek main at gallons a day in dry weather With the dam out Mr Currie estimated this infiltration would be reduced by 34050 gal lons which would be 84 per cent of the total infiltration in Willow the slaying of his father with a gesture reminiscent of old time mountain feuds Jim Graham was in the Cotton county Jail at Walters Okla today held without bond pending arraignment in connection with the killing of Harry Adair convicted killer of young Grahams father The elder Graham was slain last April in a pool hall after he had ordered Adair to leave the place Adair who it was said was intoxi cated at the time departed but re turned soon afterward and without warning killed Graham with a shot srun J H Dawsbn was then appointed and now holds the office of county engineer Mr Curtis the newly appointed city manager has had extensive ex perience in all phases of civil engi neeringand in the manufacture of drainage materials and it is fortu nate that a way is opened to retain his services in the community GIRLS ATTACKER IS CONVICTED Tennessee Negro Faces Elec tric Chair on March 14 BOLIVAR Tenn Jan 29 Convicted of attacking a 15 year old white girl by a jury which de liberated less than 10 minutes Carey Gunn 21 a Negro today faced death in the electric chair on March 14 Brot here from Memphis whfe he had been held for safe keeping Gunn was guarded by a detachment of 100 national guardsmen during his brief trial yesterday After he had been sentenced the troops re turned him to Memphis Gunn according to authorities confessed to the crime upon his ar rest last month Associated Cornish pas tor of the First Christian church here today faced a damage suit filed by Mrs Bertha Thomas 35 who asserts that the minister forcibly kissed her in a small room at the church where she is finding out what to start with first Yours WILL ROGERS eteers SEATTLE Jan 29 federal prohibition agent D Dunning was abducted by a gang of alleged liquor racketeers here early today and was found in the south end ot the city an hour and a half later badly beaten and wandering about in a daze Dunning was reported to have had one eye gouged out but au ex amination of the organ later showed it was not as badly hurt as was first believed Two Met Knckelecrs R Ginn another undercover fed eral agent who said he had been working with reported to police that they had been working on a deal with bootlegger sus pects and met the racketeers by prearranged plans Ginn said he and Dunning corn Meted the deal and that Dunning who had seen the racketeers car flashed a pair of handcuffs and snapped them on the wrist of one of the men The bootleg suspect Ginn said swung hig free hand knocked him into the street Ginn said bhe man then jumped out and kicked him several times leaped back in the car and informing Dunning that they were going to take him for a ride sped away Ginn also badly beaten managed to spread the alarm All available police officers were called to hunt for the car which authorities said was registered to James Williams of Seattle Women Strangled Him Dunning was taken to the city hospital where he was given emer gency treatment He said one of two women in the car
