owners waited in line Sat urday morning at the courthouse to obtain 1950 car li censes as the Feb 1 deadline neared when a penalty of 5 Lucky Break Ends Algona Coal Problem DCS Moines A lucky break has solved the latest coal problem in Iowa Rodney Q Selby state fuel coordinator said Satur day Selby received a distress call Friday from Algona Lyle Chamber of Commerce Sec retary said there was a commented To Set Off Blasts Near Mighty Mo Norfolk Va explo sive charges will be set off near the grounded battleship Missouri Sunday in an attempt to break the suction that imprisons her on Chesapeake bay shoal Atlantic fleet headquarters re ported Saturday the blasts will occur at ntidday at low tide and are not expected to free the 45 000ton ship A fleet spokesman said charges equal to about 75 pounds of TNT will be placed about 50 feet from the ship on either beam The ex plosiveswill be lowered into 10 foot deep holes dug in the bay bottom Shock waves which will be set up in the water by the explosives the spokesman said are designed to do 2 things 1 To squash or flatten ridges in the sand on which the Missouri rests 2 To help the ship break con tact with the sand To emphasize the small potato nature of the 150 pounds of explo sives the spokesman compared this charge with the 350pounds and 500pound depth charges the United States navy used in World war II Luana Truck Driver Killed in Accident Fayettc Moritz 29 of Luana and Elkader was killed in an auto accident near here Fri day night Coroner J R Wood said Moritz died of a skull fracture suffered when his car apparently skidded out of control andstruck a bridge The accident occurred just north pf Fayette on Highway 150 Moritz was alone in the car Thtf impact threw him from the car down an embankment and he was found by James McCarron of Fayette who was driving by Moritz was taken to a physicians office in Fayette but died soon after arrival He was a driver for Capital Tobacco company of West Union His widow and 3 children sur vive him M M hnn Reds Say Ring of AngloU S Agents Is Broken in Berlin Berlin UP Russians followed their creeping blockade of Berlin Saturday with charges that they have broken a ring of AnerloAmeripfln so soviet zone ring of AngloAmerican agojts in Germanys Taegliche Rundschau the official red army newspaper said127 saboteurs saboteurs been arrested on charges of blowing up buildings carrying arms and attempting to murder one high East German police of ficial Eight different groups one of them directed from Berlins Amer ican sector have been arrested in a roundup that started last Sep tember the papers said One espionage group planned to seize power in eastern Germany as soon as the soviet occupation tropos would withdraw the paper said It alleged this group was led by a former nazi and an agent of the British intelligence The paper said agents and saboteurs with the support of American and English imperialists disturbing5 and sabotaging the democratic develop ments in eastern Germany Charges that the organization was allied with the western powers was made after the Russians ex tended their baby blockade of Ber lin by demanding that Germans obtain special permits for travel within greater Berlin Although the announcement said the order was effective immediate ly neither east Berlin police of ficials nor the Russianlicensed German news agency ADN could say who would issue the permits The new regulation would bar travel from the western sectors into the soviet sector of Berlin without Russian approval The same type of regulation was put into effect during the Soviets total blockade of Berlin a year ago and vyas withdrawn only after the blockade was lifted Salesman Dies After Car Crash Sioux City 31yearold salesman died in an ambulance about a m Saturday after his automobile crashed into the rear ofa freight truck near the Sgt Floyd monument on Highway 75 His death marked the first traffic fatality here this year He was Harold E Beck a heat ing and plumbing supply salesman The automobile driven by Beck struck the rear of a Watson Bros Transportation Co truck carrying about 20000 pounds of freight police said The truck driven by Henry Johnson 40 was traveling north on the highway from Omaha when struck from the rear it was reported Boy Dies After Truck Hits Sled Des Moines Flatt 11 was injured fatally Friday when struck by a 2ton truck as he was sledding Police identified the truck driver as George Henry Dubois 30 of Ankeny They said Dubois told them he applied the brakes when he noticed the boy sliding down a hill but that the truck skidded on the snowpacked street and struck the boy FOUND DEAD IN TRUCK Ottuimva fi Clarence B Huffman32 Overland Mo was found dead here Friday night in the cab of a committees meeting separately the subcommittee submitted a re vised draft to a plenary joint meeting of the 2 committees on Dec 5 and 6 1949 where the final document was approved unani mously and whether this nation should produce a hydrogen bomb went on unabated Saturday following President Trumans statement tha the decision his to make is stil hanging fire Mr Trumans news conference comment Friday was his firsl public acknowledgement that a new and terrible atomic weapon perhaps 10 to 1000 times more potent than the present atomic bomb is contemplated Only a few hours before Sen ator McMahon DConn had acknowledged without actuaUy saying so that the senatehouse atomic committee has been dis cussing the weapon Pointedly avoiding the term hydrogen bom b McMahon chairman of the committee told reporters We have been discussing for advances in the technological improvement of atomic weapons and J anticipate your questions by saying this includes all types of atomic weapons McMahon made the statement after a hour closed door meet ing with the atomic energy com mission AEC Chairman David E Lili enthal who left the meeting early to see Mr Truman also had something to say about the sub ject but in an entirely different vein Lilienthal scheduled to leave the commission Feb 15 said after his white house visit that all of the published stories purporting to state his views towards the pro posed hydrogen bomb were in accurate There have been reports that Lihenthal along with some top American scientists has been op posing development of the hydro gen weapon at least until a new effort has been made to reach an agreement with Russia for out lawing all atomic armaments Military authorities have been reported anxious to develop an Hbomb on grounds that the hy colonel during the war British Woman Named Widow of Babcock Washington No was designated as the official widow of Col William T Babcock Saturday when the 52 year olc former deputy U S commissione in marita tangle remains to be determined by the courts however The London Mrs Babcock mar ried the colonel in Germany in 1945 and has a 3 year old son by him She accompanied his body from Gemany this Bergman suing for a Mexican di vorce so she can marry her Italian sweetheart will charge that her husband made her work too hard Attorney William A Cocke said Saturday Cocke an El Paso Tex lawyer who filed the actress suit here said Miss Bergman would charge her husband Dr Peter Lindstrom with cruelty The petition charges in part that Lindstrom forced her to make pictures when she didnt want to As broke the ice especially was the announcement of Gov William S Beardsley that ie will seek a 2nd term He had jeen considered a possibility for the GOP senatorial nomination Two days before Beardsleys an nouncement Senator B B Hicken ooper made it definite that he was out for a 2nd term under the republican banner The day before Hickenlooper announced he was iven a sound pat on the back by Republican State Chairman Whit ley Gillilland Sandwiched in between the aickenlooper and Beardsley an nouncements came word from Otha D Wearin Hastings farmer and former congressman that he had accepted a call to become the 5lh candidate for the democratic senatorial nomination Still awaiting an answer is the question of whether Albert J Loveland Janesville farmer and U S undersecretary of agricul ture will join the group seeking the democratic senatorial nomina tion Numerous persons mostly re publicans but some democrats too have been holding up their an nouncements for weeks to see what the governor is going to do Now that Beardsley has said he will run for reelection a flurry of announcements is expected next week Secretary of Agriculture Harry D Linn mentioned as a possible GOP candidate for senator or governor before the Hickenlooper and Beardsley statements said he would announce his plans Monday Other announcements expected next week include those of State Rep Harold F Lum Nelson RSioux City for lieutenant gov ernor and Attorney General Rob ert L Larson for republican re election to a 2nd term Lt Gov Kenneth A Evans R now completing his 3rd term has indicated he might make his decision next week He has been mentioned as a possibility for reelection or for 7th district congressman Also W H Nicholas of Mason City former state representative might come out soon for the re publican nomination for lieuten ant governor With the exceptions of Linn and Miss Jessie M Parker state su perintendent of public instruction all of the other all republican statehouse officers either have announced their intentions or are expected to seek reelection Miss Parker says she has not made up her mind The only candidate thus far for the democratic nomination for governor is M J Bennett Des Moines safety commissioner and radio disk jockey He is running on the democratic ticket but as an independent Lester S Gillette Fostoria farmer and former state senator is expected aboard was the object Saturday of a search by 40 rescue planes of 2 nations in the icy Yukon country of northwest Can ada At Timmins Ont Canadian transport department officials said a Royal Canadian air force plane one of 10 sent to help in the search for trie American sky giant ap parently is missing in northern Ontario At Sault Ste MarieMich it reported that wreckage of a large 4engined American plane was shotted in rugged northern Ontario country 100 miles north east of Sault Ste Marie v An officer of the U S air force base at Selfridge Field Mich said it was possible but improbable that this was the missing C54 He pointed out the scene was about 1500 miles from the C54s course The search for the plane in the northern Ontario country was spurred by a report from 2 un identified truck drivers that they saw a large plane crash late Fri day in bush country 30 miles south of Chapleau which is 100 miles north of Sault Ste Marie The reported wreckage could not be that of the Royal
