Crash COUNCIL BLUFFS James Underwood 31 Council Bluffs was killed Sunday and eight other persons were injured when her car skidded on a muddy street and crashed into a power pole Authorities said the 12 The others injured were Mrs Maude Foster 66 Mrs James children died Sunday morning in a farm home fire about three miles east of Northwood on Highway 105 The dead children of Mr and Mrs Bernard Abrahams were Roger 4 Barbara Eileen 8 and Sharon Kay 13 The parents and four other chil dren escaped from the house which was destroyed The blaze started about 2 am Abrahams and one daughter Mary Ellen 16 were in satisfac tory condition at Mercy Hospital Abrahams suffered cuts on the arms and smoke inhalation when he attempted to rescue children trapped in the second story of the home Mary Abrahams suffered bacK injuries wnen she jumped from an upstairs window in the blazing house Two Released Also admitted to Park Hospital t released after treatment vere Mrs Abrahams and another daughter Shirley 15 who also es caped the house by jumping from an upstairs window and suf ered an ankle injury Family members who escaped from the home without injury were two Abrahams sons David 19 and Duane 11 Abrahams said he and his wife awoke downstairs and smelled smoke in the house shortly after 2 am The three boys were sleep ing in another downstairs bed room aiid Abrahams called to them to leave the house He at tempted to go upstairs to the room where the four girls were sleep ing but was forced back by smoke The father said he then ran outside the house and threw up a ladder to the east second floor window As he broke the window with his handssmoke and heat gushing from the window again forced him back Leap From Window Whether the two girlswho leaped from the second floor jumped before or after their father attempt ed to get to them was not known Also un known in the nights confusion was the reason the you n g e s t boy did not es cape from the downstairs bed room ROGER A deputy sheriff at the scene said Mary told him that she tried to puirsharon from the upstairs SHARON BARBARA room with her but that the fright ened younger girl refused to jump By the time the Northwood fire department could be called and dispatched to the scene it was too late to save any of the house Iowa Highway Patrolman M A Pelham who arrived at the INJURED IN Abrahams looks up from
