Walker Cites Many Complaints Much Work to Be Done DES MOINES law makers will be asked to legislate against bee rdrinking television commercials and sexy or obscene it was disclosed here Thursday Kent Emery assistant attorney general has been working for more than a week on two bills of the moral legislation program Sen John Walker RWilliams said the measures will be intro duced in the Senate at originating outside Iowa such com mercials would have to be blacked out in compliance with such a law Emery has checked existing leg lslation on a national level as a possibility for patterning the low bills The attorney generals office has been in contact with the Wis consin attorney general where sim ilar comic book legislation is to be under study On other matters Thursday 26 representatives introduced a bil for a 35milliondollar Korean war soldiers bonus in the Iowa Legis lature The bill backed by the American Legion would set a maximum in dividual bonus of matching the top World War H state bonus payments Approval of the gianl bond issue to pay the bonus would be put up to a vote of the people in 1956 The bonds would be liqui dated by a direct annual Under the proposal veterans would get for each month oJ overseas duty and for each month of stateside duty served be tween June 27 1950 and July 27 1953 Demos Switch Date of Nominating Convention WASHINGTON UPl Democrats twitched plans Thursday on a date for their presidential nomi nating convention in Instead of Aug 27 as previously selected National Committee Chairman Paul M Butler said it has now been decided to night at the KGLO transmitter station while a 17 degree below reed ing was recorded by the CAA at the Mason City Municipal Airport It was the coldest night so far this one previous reading having gone below zero a 1 last Sunday morning More of the same kind of weather was forecast for Thursday night however with the weatherman expecting 18 degrees below zero for North Iowa The coldest Jan 26 on record a U in 1930 The coldest Jan 27 was 24 in 1904 The coldest Jan 28 was 28 in 1915 The lowest feading on record for Mason City according to the KGLO weather man was a 35 on Feb 910 1899 Million Short If Food Tax Is Removed DES MOINES would lose nearly 14 million dollars a year in income if the sales tax were removed from food and the tax rate were retained at 2 per cent That was the report Thursday of Louis E Cook research director of the Iowa State Tax Commission Since there have been suggestions that the sales tax be increased to 3 per cent Cooks report also included estimates based on a 3 per cent sales tax yield as well as the present 2 per cent figure Cook compiled the figures at the request of Sen J G Lucas R chairman ofthe Senate Ways and Means Committee The committee now is consider ng various proposals for increas ing state revenue Among meas ures which have been suggested s an increase of one per cent in the state sales tax The state badly needs more in ome Its expenditures now are jxceeding revenue by about mil ion a year and many groups are lushing for large increases in ap Topriations Some senators have argued that if the sales tax is increased food hould be exempted to prevent a lardship on those least able to afford it We arent contemplating at this time taking the sales tax off ucas said These figures were athered only for our information Ve arent even sure yet were go ing to increase the sales Cooks figures showed the sales tax on food last year produced Thats about 22 per ent of the total of slightly more lan million that came from ales taxes Minnesota Governor Accepts Challenge ST PAUL Minn W Gov Gr ille Freeman of Minnesota Wednesday night accepted an Iowa tiallenge to a traffic safety con est this year and urged his state eview speed ists tightening up on drivers li enses absolute speed limits nd yield rightofway signs Milwaukee Line Freight Derailed in Postville Area POSTVTLLE cars of an eastbound Milwaukee Rail road freight train went off the tracks about two miles east of here early Thursday No one was in jured Postville is in southern Al lamakee County in northeast Iowa The cars were in the center sec tion of the train It was headed for Chicago from Sioux Falls The train was carrying a variety of shipments including some meat and hogs One of the cars loaded with hogs was the most damaged railroad personnel reported Immediate cause of the derail ment was not known Des Moines Man Dies After Crash DES MOINES man suf fering a heart attack Wednesday died of a skull fracture after an ambulance taking him to a hospital collided with a car at an intersec ion here The dead man was Roy Henry Bauer 66 Des Moines Bauer and an attendant Earl tonin were thrown out of the rear door of the ambulance by the mpact Bauer was degrees below zero in the Midwest Thursday and stretched its icy grip towards the Atlantic Coast The mass of Arctic air pushed the temperature below zero as fa south as northern Missouri and central Illinois The mercury tumbled 5 to 29 degrees from the Dakotas eastward to Indiana aw Ohio It was the coldest weather of the ieason for practically all of the Midwest and cold wave warnings were issued
