Welding works at 112 South Commercial avenue The amount of welded construction today represents a gradual growth re sulting from years ot experimental ana development work which has en tailed a considerable amount of work One of tlie best examples of the at tention given this Phase the in dustry is that of a Cincinnati trans portation company The first scml Tvelded car had been In senice under heavy duty for two years and has never been returned to the shops for overhauling Thlg is considered an un usual Mr McPeak for these cars haul acid and a years run has heretofore been considered satis factory because tho slightest leak the wooden tanlt caused a deterioration to begin along the rivet line of the center frame Tliis deterioration generally re sulted in the car being returned to shop where tho frame was either re placed or spliced which was costly not only in respect to the actual labor cost but also tho loss of earnings while tho car was out of service A new car was recently fabricated 15welding at a cost of as com pared to a cost of 54200 for rivetctl construction This Bavins said Mr arcPeak was in no way due to any re luctlon in the cost of Tabor material but was entirely due to the redesign Ins which welding permitted and to the decreased thno of assembly Soft Coal Output at Peak With 150000 Idle PARK INN CAFE Park Inn Hotel Phono 5J5 HealthNaurocalometer production on the basis or latest estimates is running close to record height possibly 150 000 union coal minors are unemployed and the outlook for their return to regular employment is far from bright Over Jnuch of the centra coal pro ductng territory in the United States an aftermath of protracted strikes and sharp disagreement over union wage scales has proven to ba com plete shutdown ot coal mines while steady development of new sources of supply and efficient transportation conditions has maintained a supply whfch tor months now hag met or ex ceeded demand Large Tonnage Mined In a recent six day week more than 11000000 tons of soft coal were mined and shipped Sagging market prices lave indicated that there was no fle nand anywhere In the United States this quanlity did not meet effectively Studies of present production made tor the United States bureau mines by K G Tryon show that a steady shift ot production from nurili to south has characterized recent history in tho industry Both the goiernment and industrial observers agree that factor operating lias been the long drawn out wage controversy between miners anl operators but few expect that tho oncedominant northern union organi will be reestablished within any length oC time now foreseen In a typical week Illinois which still is n strong union center produced 1217000 tons of coal whllo In tho corresponding week of 1928 It pro duced 1730000 tons and in the same week of 1923 its production was 1671 000 Iiidlmnx Union State Indiana another firm union state produced In a ilke week 344000 tons whereas Tor 1826 the weekly output was 674000 Ohio which in one weol of 1923 mined 764000 tons In the week of Nov 24 192S mined 422000 tons In Pennsylvania where the opera tlons are largely nonunion and opai shop today output has been gradual ly crawling up reaching 216o000 tons a week last year The figure for 1021 BIS 3431000 tons What has replaced this fallen unioi district production la clearly shown by tho study of figures for the single dia trlct ot southern West Virginia where the weekly output IB now run nins to 2182000 tona from territorj that In 1923 was producing 1304000 tons Similar figures on a smaller scale can ba produced from Tennes see Kentucky and Virginia The significant fact is that all the southern territory has shown steady expansion of output Irom mines that have never had union contracts since development and that the quantity available has more than sufficed to meet the deficiency occasioned by northern shut downs Had Temporary Contracts In Illinois the union got temporary operating contacts liut ot thestates 100000 miners scarcely arc able norr to get semiregular employ ment since the markets do not en able mines to operate Even less success has been met In reestablishing the Ohio and Indiana producers tho In western territory counting Iowa Kansas and the strong union state of Wyoming moi or less agreement lias been attained Scales are considerably below tin 750 level cited and even at the low cr figure the northern producers hav been unable to reetore their old out put levels In southern territory railroads am operators alike have increased faeili ties bettered methods and ta7tcn surer srip on markets Also coal in not the kins that It used to be with hydro and central power installations and interchange and with oil fuel ie MUSIC Local Piano Tuner Thinks Public to Be Assured of Better Musicians So much that is new in science ami invention lias appeared n thelast few years that we find ourselves In much the same predicament as that ot the small boy who tries to take In every thing at a three ring circus but finds it an Impossible task Forest Jacobs local piano tuner when queried about music in tha future whether it will be man made or ma chine made After the country broke out with the radio rash he continued some that radio would help the musical artist others that it would hinder him This question Is still much bandied about there being about as many opinions as there are individ uals Radio has certainly disseminated Qualities ot good aa well as of bad music but whether it has materially helped tho musician is problematical AOW comes the recent progeny of progress mechanical music in tho mo tion picture theaters which if uni versally adopted threatens to displace large numbers of musicians at pres ent employed It this new device con tributes to the greatest good of the greatest number nothing can stop it It seems equally settevident that persona will always prefer a good per sonal performance to a good mechani cal ircrfonrumco ot music According ly musicians who compete against machine music Have tha advantage that Is t they are good But if they are mediocre they will probably find themselves subject io the law of the survival of the fittest At all events says Mr Jacobs we ought to be as sured music which Is better played Dr F C Shaklee Chiropractor Electro Therapist FOOD
