Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - January 22, 1964, Mason City, Iowa y Britt Garner give wets a victory in Hancock By CHARLES W WALK North Newt Director GARNER Heavy support in Britt and Garner gave wets a victory in the reverse option liquor election in Hancock County Tuesday The final vote found 1966 sup porting liquorbylhedrink and 1429 opposing it The total vote of 3395 was more than the vote on the December rcappor tiorimcnt plan and only 638 less than the vote in the 1962 general election Britt supported liquorbythe drink by a vole of 529 to 267 Garner supported it 458 to 172 The wot majority in those hvo towns was 548 compared to 537 for the entire county Nine out of the 16 precincts in the county supported the present liquor situation The precinct with the highest percentage of voters favoring liquorbylhe drink was Garfield which in cludes the town of Duncan That precinct supported iquorbylhe drink by a vote of 11813 Greatest opposition to liquor came from Amsterdam precinct which includes Kanawha That precinct voted against the cur rent situation 198107 Magor precinct which includes Cor with also opposed liquor by a vote of 10373 This was the 18th county liqucrbythedrink election held in the state since the law went into effect last July Ten of the elections have been won by the wets and seven were won by the drys The outcome of the election means that new applications for liquor licenses can be accepted in the county No election to try to get rid of liquorbylhedrink can be held in the county for another four years Hancock County presently has three liquor license holders Two are for public clubs one in Corwith the other in The thiid is for a private cub in Garner Major opposition to iquorby thedrink in Hancock County had come from an organicion known as Citizens of Hancock County for Liquor Control The Rev Mr Grover Branson Britt was chairman of the group which had the support of the Hancock County Ministerial Assn Wednesday the Rev Mr Branson indicated he was a little disappointed in the elec tion results He said hat ap parently there wore some Voters who opposed liquorbylhedrink but didnt vote because they felt the wets would win anyway This defeatism hurt the dry cause he said Support for the liquorbylhe drink law came from a group known as Citizens for Progress in This Community The group maintained the present law is better than a host of uncon trolled speakeasys Hancock now joins the follow ing counties in the svct camp Boone Henry Keokuk Story Van Buren Warren Washing ton Guthrie Clay and Greene Counties engineer of the State High way Commission says construction of interstate high ways in some Iowa cities is being speeded up to buy a little free time in case we hit a snag L M Clauson said in an interview that the share of interstate funds allocated for freeway construction has been increased for the next three or four years The commission has been following a formula which calls for 27per cent of interstate funds to be spent in cities and 73 per cent in rural areas That formula was adopted by the commission interstate was started Clauson said Doctors say girl 10 to have a child In the next three or four years however about 30 per cent of interstate speeding will be for con struction of city freeways We think it is desireable to speed up urban construction to make sure we get the urban in terstate completed in time Clauson said We can move faster in rural areas lhan we can in cities and we can catch up in rural areas if it gels out of balance One of the problems faced in building interstate highways in urban areas Clauson said is ihat we have to deal with so many property owners The commission plans to step up its construclion schedule in Council Bluffs and in Des Moines Clauson said The formula for allocating in terstate funds is not required by state or federal law and can be changed as the commission de sires Clauson explained It was adopted so that
