Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - January 22, 1960, Mason City, Iowa North Iowas Doily Newspaper Edited for tfw VOL n MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE The Newspaper That Makes All North lowans Neighbors MASON CITY IOWA FRIDAY JANUARY M 1WO copy Paper TWO Prcu ITK Preii rul He M 406 trapped in Africa coal mine Lets try i this test J on safety Study questions carefully some are tricky By WILLIAM EBERLINE DES MOINES Hey there Mr and Mrs Iowa motorist See how you score on this true false test 1 About twice as many peo ple are killed each year in Iowa in collisions involving t w o or more cars as in onecar acci dents 2 Because of the great amount of traffic in cities anc towns your chances of getting killed in a motor vehicle acci dent there are greater than on rural roads 3 A big increase in fatal acci dents on secondary roads large ly accounted for the 79 more traffic deaths in Iowa this year than last 4 MORE ACCIDENTS occur at night than in the daytime 5 Bad weather is one of the major causes of fatal traffic ac cidents in Iowa 6 Iowa youngsters apparentlj are learning to ride their bicy Mexico tin cles more carefully because bi interview cycles were involved in fewer fatalities in 1959 than in 1958 Now its no fair peeking at th answers below before you tak the test If you havent done so go back and try your luck be fore reading any farther If you rated any of the state ments above as true then yoi need to do a little boning up on your motor vehicle statistics Cheer up folks Floridas cold too It was cold throughout Iowa Friday but colder in the west than in the east An intermittent cloud cover kept tempera tures above zero in the east Council Bluffs had 7 below Boone 5 below and Mason City 1 below But Davenport had a reading of 9 above zero The Weather Bureau said the mercury wouldnt rise very much Indications were that the cold weather wouid continue through the weekend Temperatures were expected to go below zero in all sec tions of the state Saturday morning with readings of 4 to 12 below zero But lowans arent atone in the cold Even Florida shivered in an unaccustomed cold wave that kept tourists under wraps in the South and threatened citrus and vegetable crops farther north Temperatures plunged to a low of 19 at Gainesville in north Florida and Miami recorded a low of 36 degrees coldestever for a Jan 22nd Frost covered lawns and automobile wind shields State officials said there was definitely damage to vege table crops but said the states multimillion dollar citrus in dustry apparently escaped serious harm Spears7 wife says it was William Taylor who died in air crash DALLAS Tex Robert Vernon Spears young wife ad mitted Thursday night she met the exconvict and naturopath in Dallas two weeks that it was William Allen Taylor who died in a Nov 16 airliner crash But she doesnt believe Spears placed a bomb aboard the plane which carried 42 persons to their deaths in the Gulf of Mexico the 36yearold woman said in a dramatic radiotelevision rview The interview with KRLD news director Eddie Barker came about 24 hours after the FBI found her portly 65yearold husband in Phoenix Ariz Here was answer when she was asked if she believes man with a 33year criminal record bombed the airliner Regardless of his past re gardless of what he has done or TAKE QUESTION No 1 fo example You might think a first glance that auto collision would be quite a bit more deac ly than onecar accidents But Iowa Safety Department figures show accidents involv ing two or more cars in 1959 claimed 340 lives as against 337 deaths in oneear accidents Jn 1958 twocar collisions took 296 lives onecar accidents 302 That indicates your chances of getting killed are about the same in the two types of acci dent Of the onecar accidents auto mobiles running off the roadway accounted for the most fatalities in 1959 and 157 in 1958 Figures on other types of one car accidents are Car pedes trian 67 in 1959 and 54 in 1958 cartrain 28 in 1959 and 31 in 3958 car hitting fixed object 34 in 1959 and 35 in 1958 car overturned in road 13 in 1959 9 in 1958 other noncollision ac cidents 8 in 1959 1 in 1958 AND HERES THE answer to No 6 Car bicycle accidents claimed 14 lives in 1959 against only 7 in 1958 It might also seem logical that the more traffic the more like lihood of fatal accidents But the figures dont bear this out Of the 677 traffic deaths in Iowa in 1959 the Safety Depart ment says 394 or about 58 per cent occurred on rural primary highways In 1958 the figure was 317 out of a total of 598 Accidents in cities and towns caused only 95 or 14 per cent of the 1959 total deaths There were only 88 urban deaths in 1958 or 15 per cent of the total Rural secondary road acci dental deaths fell off to 188 last year from 193 a year earlier The Safety Departments an alysis of 1959 data isnt yet com plete but the experience of 1958 indicated this Of the 55912 ac cidents in Iowa in 1958 some 53 per cent occurred during day light hours And 76 per cent took place on dry roads 10 per cent on snow or ice and the rest on muddy or wet roads DOCTOR DIES PENANG Malaya Wu Lien tch 81 credited with sav ing millions of persons in Chin from the bubonic plague in 1910 tiitd Thursday said or what has been said about him I know he is a very kind person to me and to others I do not believe he was cap able of putting a bomb on a plane She said Spears gave his res ervation on the flight to Taylor a 60yearold longtime friend from Tampa Fla He told her that he read the next day that the plane had crashed and seized the opportunity to disap pear Spears told her of the decep tion during a secret visit to Dal las two weeks ago she related He hoped his young wife and two infant children would bene fit from more than 8100000 in life insurance he carried Did he mention Al William Allen Taylor she was asked Yes he did she replied evenly What did he say He Spears said that he Taylor was on the plane she said He was sorry it had to lappen to him or anyone else In Tampa Taylors exwife Alice she had that her former husband was unduly influenced by Dr Spears and betrayed Morth Iowa Clear and colder Friday night lows
