Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - January 22, 1936, Mason City, Iowa MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE JANUARY 22 1936 THREE HOAR BIOGRAPHY TELLS STORY OF PROGRESS IN II S Senator Notes Difference in Times From Boyhood to Later Life By FREDERIC J HASKJN WASHINGTON Jan the close of his life George Frisbie Hoar who served his native state of Massachusetts for 36 continuous years in the house of representatives anrf the senate wrote his autobiog raphy The senator had been born in a rural community near Concord in 1826 and he notes in his book that the conditions under which he dwelt as a boy were scarcely any different from those subsisting in a rural Ital ian vijlage in the latter days of the Roman empire a thousand years ear lier In his community there were no tools save hand tools and a few con traptions worked by manual or ani mal power such as treadmills and windlasses engines which were in SLENDERIZE Your Fingertips 3s there tt man or mho has not admired slen der fineers You too chaise So high were transportation costs that there was scarcely any inland trade Neighbor hoods traded among themselves lo cally and the goods consisted of the produce of their lands and the work of their hands Rode Fast Trains Senator Hoar lived to ride on fast railroad trains of the twentieth cen tury and in automobiles such as were never dreamed of in his early days He say the rise of the machine age and the revolution of the means of production Born into a world in which the only inkling of electricity had been that of Benjamin Frank lin which had been neglected and put to no practical use he lived to see a growing transference from steam to electric power Petroleum as a fuel and a motive power was unknown in his youth Within the span of his life fell ma jor wars and successive depressions some deep and dire others of short duration The scale of prices ran up and down over the years like a scale of musical notes In the years since 1929 many Americans appear to have adopted a habit of thought that the times are the worst the most backward ever known It seems only neces sary to examine such an autobiog raphy as that of Senator Hoar to be aware that there has been a steady surging forward and that the gen eral direction is continuing High Record Mark The year 1929 set a high record mark for American prosperity for all time The national income was not far short of and individual incomes weze high in proportion Since then it has been customary to look back to 1929 as to a high peak now beyond thought of attainment The plain truth is that in a num her of lines the year 1935 produced peaks loftier even than 1929 There was not the uniform high level which 1929 had known but here and there peaks shot up beyond anything 1929 had experienced All time high records were scored in production and sales of electric power itself the symbol of a new industrial cycle A record produc tion of rayon was registered The wool consumption was the highest it ever had been with the single exception of the World war years when America was not only pro What To Eat To Get StrengthBuilding Iodine into Blood and Glands Science Says Regular Ration of NATURAL IODINE Is Hauptmann case is expect ed to be disclosed by Stephen A Spitz above who released from a Chicago jail after serving sen tence for forgery promised lo go to New Jersey to give highly important evidence Meanwhile authorities investigated Spitzs story that in August 1934 two men showed him federal reserve notes which they said were part of the Lindbergh ransom money and offered to sell him worth at 40 cents on the dollar Spitz had indicated that he actu ally handled and passedsome of the ransom bills ducing wool garments and blankets for her own troops but for the troops of the allies Production and sale of shoes reached an alltime high level Gasoline Consumption All time high records were set for washing machines and for oil burn ers for electric refrigerators and for air conditioning equipment Gasoline consumption set its high record The consumption of plate glass reached a record and air trans port exceeded any previous year Record figures were shown for me chanical stokers for nickel produc tion electric lamps radios and cig arets It is obvious at a glance that most of these products are products of a new machine age but by no means all People wore much the same kind of shoes half a century ago that they wear today and the rec ord peacetime wool consumption is impressive This is not all of the story In a number of other lines tile highest records since 1929 have been made If 1929 be regarded as an abnor mally high there is gen era agreement to that the registering of highest points since that date seems significant Such records were made for ma chine tools automobiles viicuum cleaners mail order sales petroleum production and production Family hi Affairs All these facts point to an emer gence from depression which is more than impressive A complete appiC ciation of the surge forward is best obtained by thinking back to the lifetime of Senator Hoar who in what was then the most progressive part of England lived in conditions little different than they had been a thousand years ago Indeed it might be well to em ploy the Hoar family of Massachi setts as a sort of yardstick to meas ure the steady growth of American economic life Samuel Hoare was born in Lincoln Mass in 1778 In that year there was much doubt as to the foundation of an United States of America True the declaration of independence had been made two years earlier but a declaration is of no avail unless made good with force of arms When Samuel Hoar was bcrn it was far from certain that in dependence would be achieved and this long course of progress which the United States has known em barked upon Samuel Hoar was elected to congress in 1S35 The pop ulation was but 15000000 The Mex ican war had not yet been fought Son of Samuel Hoar Senator Hoar whose auto biography has been referred to was Samuel Hoars son There was another son Gbenezer Rook wood Hoar He was born in 1816 just after the close of the War of 1812 In 1869 he became at torney general of the United States and in 1873 he was elected to con gress the brothers George and Eb enezer both sitting for Massachu setts at the same time In 1873 Lhere fell what appeared at the time he worst depression the country had ever known The greenback and questions were exercising the public mind Senator Hoar had n son Rook wood born at Worcester Mass in 1855 After serving his common wealth in many local capacities he was elected to congress in 1905 Eb enezer also had a son Sherman born in Concord in 1860 Sherman was elected to congress in 1891 another year remembered for panic It is an interesting footnote that the Revolu tionary grandfather his sons and one grandson all were elected to congress as republicans or the ear lier equivalent Only Sherman was elected to congress as a democrat Conway to Run Again for Rail Commissioner DES MOINES Tan 22 claring I will make the campaign on my record M P Conway chairman of the state railroad com mission announced he is a candi date
