Editor Hall and his traveling companion Willis Fatten expect to return to Mason City By W EARL HALL VAINIKKALA Finland No more shaking and quaking over Communist Russia for me One weeks visit in its three principal cities not long enough I readily admit to make me an ex pert has removed any such disposition for all time to come My tour has been doubt about it In Kiev Moscow and Leningrad I had the services of what was called an in but thats just a weasel word for Wonders of Marxism Ive seen all the wonders of Marxism I was supposed to see But they havent been half as revealing or educational as the things Ive seen on my own through the cracks and around the edges of the picture on display Russias economy simply doesnt belong in the same league with ours What I strongly suspected about the basic character of Com munism on the basis of my contacts with its two forms five years ago Titoism in Yugoslavia and Stalinism in East Germany has progressed into a considered judgment these past eight days Im ready to say unqualifiedly that applied Marxism under either the Moscow or the Belgrade label is a counterfeit and a phony that it contains within itself the seeds of its own destruc tion Nowhere including Russia does it have the sanction of those whom it enslaves Two comparisons Russian Communism can be made to look good by two types of rigged comparison 1 Its better than the Czarism it supplanted 40 years if and only if you assume that the Czarism of that time would have stood still 2 The standard of living here is undoubtedly higher than in Indonesia India and other countries of Southeast Asia but thats a reflection of Natures works not Communisms One clay last week I visited a collective farm where 300 work ers were doing approximately what 25 Iowa farm families would do on the same acreage The cattle hogs and chickens were in heated pavilions but the workers were living in the unpainted strawcovered houses occupied by tenant peasants under land lordism back in 1917 A haif dozen huge statebuilt apartment buildings in Moscow have the external appearance of a great American insurance companys home office Theyre occupied by the favored few Theres no secret about that But the average Ivan and Katrina and their brood live in what would be set down as slumconditions anywhere in the free world In both Moscow and Leningrad there are subway systems which in elegance of stations and modern rolling stock would have no superior and probably no equal in the world This mode of transportation has had complete priority over such minor matters as food and housing My efforts to inspect a typical factory failed But every clay in my meanderings I could scrutinize a typical industrial product the Russian automobile The de luxe models coining Leningrad to Helsinki on a Russian express train is taking 15 hours And its miles across Siberia An afternoon spent at the enormous new plant of Moscow University high above the Moscow river on Lenin Hills left me with the distinct impression that much which passes for high level technological education and engineering in Russia would be rated as mere trade school training in our country A mammoth recreational center within a U bend of the Mos cow River below the University with stadium seating where the 1964 Olympic Games may be held is a symbol of Red Russias accent on physical development their home grounds DownGrading Snagged Stalins benign countenance still beams down on vou from every airport terminal and other public places His downgrad ing quite obviously has struck a snag Every guide has his story learned I heard it from several It runs thus Stalin was undoubtedly a great man He did many wonder ful things for the Russian people But now weve advanced far enough along the road to true Communism to have a collective leadership rather than a oneman dictatorship We shall never have to submit to it Want to bet Religions status is just a bit difficult to appraise Atheism is still at the core of Communism but for practical reasons theres a disposition to be tolerant with those who seem to want their religious Sunday as a day of rest is officially recog imcd Christmas is
