Polaris Rocket CAPE CANAVERAL Fla UP The Navy launched a Polaris ballistic missile test vehicle here Friday It was the first Polaris test officially identified as such Judging from its performance at the start and until it disap peared down the Air Force missile lest range it was a highlj successful shot It streaked away straight as an arrow toward its undisclosed target The Lockheed missile was launched at one minute before 8 am less than an hour after sunrise into a cloudless sky Watchers in the chill morning air saw it whoosh upward with a considerably greater rate of acceleration than that of other big ballistic missiles launched recently The Polaris is noted for its fantastic speed In Washington the Defense De partments director of missiles William Holaday said the firing was considered a success Holaday said the device that was tested includes a forerunner of the revolutionary Polaris pro pulsion engine We will be mak ing and firing more of these as we go on with the development of the missile he said Polails named after the North Star is the Navys 1500mile in termediate range ballistic mis sile It was designed for launch ing from atomic powered subma rines above or below water as well as from aboard ships Most Complex Polaris reportedly will be the biggest and most complex missile the Navy ever has attempted to build At the same time it will be smaller and lighter than the other the Air Force Thor and the Army the nations arsenal General Corp Sacra mento Calif is developing the solid propellant engine for the Polaris The Navy initially worked with the Army in development of the Jupiter IRBM which like the Air Force Thor uses a liquid pro pellant The Navy turned to solid propellant rocket power as more practical for use aboard ship after that type of fuel and oxi dizer combination became avail able in efficient and usable form Atom Submarines Secretary of Defense McEiroy told the House Armed Services Committee this week that the Na vy wants to invest 296 million Wants Red Tape Cut on Missiles WASHINGTON UP A pioneer aircraft manufacturer Friday called for more guts and less gobbledegook to speed US pro duction of US missiles and anti missile missiles Donald W Douglas chairman of the board of the Douglas Air craft Corp said only a small fraction of the necessary funds has been made available for work on the Zeus antimissile projecl on which his firm is working with Bell Telephone Laboratories and Western Electric Nearly two years ago we felt this weapon was sufficiently feas ible to warrant a goahead he told the Senate Preparedness Sub committee but so far only a small fraction of the necessary funds has been made available Long Wait In the case of the 1500mile in termediate range ballistic missile Thor Douglas said that even af ter successful test firings we waited from August to December for an order to increase produc tion of this muchneeded missile But Douglas testified that on the whole he could say most
