VOL LXIII Associated Press United Press Full Lease Wires Seven Cents Copy MidEast Doctrine Needed or Troops Will MASON CITY TUESDAY JANUARY 15 1957 r The World Around Us War Hurt Economy of Malaya Number 50 By W EARL HALL TOHORE BAHRU Malaya An J important chapter of World War II history came alive to me today I stood on the spot where about 15 years ago the Japanese launched one of their cleverest bits of invasion ary strategy one that enabled them to capture Singapore with c o m p a r ative ease A s p e c i a f marker erected WASHINGTON UP Dulles said Tuesday there is a very great likelihood American boys may have to fight in the Middle East unless Congress ap proves President Eisenhowers program for that area The secretary of state made the statement in response to question ing by Sen Langer Dul les said that if Eisenhowers pro posal is adopted there is very little likelihood American boys will have to fight in the Middle East Second Day For the second day members of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees were questioning Dulles about the Eisenhower program which calls for financial aid to nations of the Middle East and standby author ity to use U S troops to combat any direct Soviet aggression in that part of the world Therewere plans at one time to wind up the questioning of Dul by the Japs W Earl Hall themselves be fore they were pushed out of the Malaya country in 1945 stands at the place where under cover of darkness they tossed clusters of ropebound coconuts into the strait and then swam along be hind the ruse almost a mile to Singapore Island I remember the AP story Small Force By a process of ingenious in filtration the comparatively small force of coconut concealed Nips were able to prepare for the at tack next day by bombers work ing out of nearby Burma and Thailand and an assault force of paratroopers here in Johore as they crossed the narrow body of water under artillery cover All the while it will be recalled British guns in the formidable fortifications in Singapore itself were pointed out to sea from whence the attack had been ex pected And the implacements were such as not to admit of turning the guns around The Japs just wouldnt fight the war according to accepted rules This fouryear period of Malay an Straits history is one which most residents here would like to forget I discover Our driver All bin Abdul Karim a Ceylon born Moslem could perhaps be accepted as a case in point Heard Siren One day while at work in a rubber processing plant in Sing apore Ali heard a siren A bomb ing raid was imminent Eleven of his fellow workers found room in a concrete shelter AJi and six others had to be content with foxholes A direct hit killed the 11 Ali and his six buddies in the improvised trenches escaped Equally vivid in his memory is the program under which the invaders took all the usable food les Tuesday But after protests by Sen Morse DOre against any pressure to shorten Sen Green who heads up the joint group said Dulles would be called for further questioning after next weeks inauguration ceremonies Speaking in a hoarse voice Morse told the public hearing Im so frightened about matter Im almost speechless as my voice Proof Wanted Several Democratic senators have said they want to ask Dul les to give some proof for a state ment he made the Communist threat to the Middle East family had to raise its own plot of this root plant which develops in three months Tapioca isnt among Alis favorite foods today But the blow from which the state of Johore has been slowest to recover is one growing out of the Japanese destruction of the regions lifegiving rubber trees The invaders needed firewood Curious Sight On my brief visit o a rubber plantation and processing plant a few miles from this capital city of one of the worlds most important producers of rubber I learned that the tree with the sticky secretion has a life span of 35 years But it takes seven years to get one into production A grove of rubber trees with hundreds of cups suspended at the base of a spiral gash in the bark is indeed a curious sight for a boy from the corn country Johore joined to Singapore Is
