One official but unquotable source asserted none of the Jeder aKagents state police and local of ficers had a single new clew of im portance to follow No Inquest Planned Meanwhile Coroner T H Long of Pierce county Tacoma and Stowell Challacombe of Snoho mish ocunly Everett announced they planned no inquest in the boys death Their action indicated the kidnaper if captured will be tried under either the state or fed eral kidnaping statutes rather than on a murder charge Eitherabduction law would al low prosecutors to seek a death penalty Although the federal agents were in charge of the case state and local officers continued their independent searches Near Everett Wash state pa trolmen said they were investigat ing two mysterious automobiles seen in the area Sunday night when the boys body was believed to have been dumped on its last hiding place Slain Last Friday C o r o n e rs reports indicated Charles was slain about last Fri day his body allowed to freeze in some exposed spot then carried to the clump of brush and dumped there some 12 or 18 hours before il was discovered One of the automobiles was left in a garage at Marysville by a rhiddleaged man who failed to re turn for it A boys cap was founc on a rear seat Tire tracks of another machine seen near a shack about three miles from where the body was found were also being comparec with those near the body Local officers at Tacoma Olympia EyerettSeattle and other Washington cities were known t be following clews they hav previously allowed to remain un investigated for fear their action might cause the kidnaperto kil his victim Watch for Sedan A Seattle police broadcast an order to officers to watch for a 1936 model blue sedan Nash which they said was to be investi gated in connection with thi Mattson case Officers wen warned to use extreme caution in stopping the machine as the drive was believed to be armed The automobile was stolen from John Long of Lilliwaup Wash and was last seen on paid though Dr Matson had made repeated at empts to do so Demand for the death penalty should the kidnaper be captured and brought to trial in federal court here was a foregone con clusion though no officers could reached to confirm it The prosecutor of Pierce county announced some time ago he would seek the death penalty should the trial be held in a state court Under the Lindbergh federal kidnap law the department of justice can assume charge of a kidnaping hunt seven days after an abduction on the assumption the victim has been carried across a state line If the kidnaper is captured he can fight trial in fed eral court by proving no such crossing of a state line was made To Offer Reward While the hunt progressed Lieut Gov Victor Meyers an nounced a bill would probablyvbe introduced in the state senate of fering a S5000 reward for infor mation leading to the Itidnapers arrest One group of newspapers has already offered 51000 for such exclusive information Tacoma police broadcast pickup orders for suspected fugitives paroled inmates of mental insti tutions and sadists An examina tion of the boy by Coroner Otto H Mittelstadt of Seattle revived a theory a maniac or degenerate may have been the abductor DE and Mrs Mattson and their remaining children William 16 and Muriel 14 remained in their home Tuesday Both the physi cian and his wife were reported under the care of special nurses Private Funeral Services Meanwhile Lt Col Gus B Ap pelman close family friend an nounced funeral services would be private and would be held as soon as investigating officers complet ed their examination of the body and members of the family regain sufficient control Paul Sceva another close friend who made the first positive iden tification oC the boys body at Ev erett Monday said the family will stay inside the home until after Charles funeral After that they may go away to escape all this Virginia Chatfield who with William and Muriel Mattson wit nessed the abduction from the Mattson home Dec 27 was re ported ill from shock Jn Seattle Her mother said the 15 year old girl would aid authorities in the hunt for the kidnaper after she is calmer The girl she added is certain she can identify the kidnaper 5220 Dropped Off Iowas Relief Rolls DBS MOINES state sur vey of relief need resulted in the elimination of 5220 persons from Iowa WPA rolls state relief au thorities announced Officials said 1520 of those dropped were ac tually working on WPA jobs The others had previously been con sidered eligible for the jobs Beaten to Death by Kidnaper CHARLES the drama HUNT SLAYER OF N Y HOUSEWIFE i Body of Victim Found in Overflowing Bathtub by Husband NEW YORK slaying of a 25 year old housewife whose beaten and strangled body was found in an overflowing bathtub sent police on an intensive man iunt Tuesday The body of the victim Mrs Mary Robinson Case clad only in silk underwear and stockings was discovered by her 30 year old husband Frank when he re urned to his Jackson Heights Queens apartment Monday night Bloodstains in the kitchen gave evidence that Mrs Case battled violently with her assailant and officials suggested she possibly was slain there andher body car ried to the bathroom which also was spattered with blood A sheet covered the tub A rubber stopper was in the drain pipe Like Tittcrton Case The slaying was similar in circumstances to the murder last April of Mrs Nancy E Titlerton 34 year old writer Mrs Titter ton was criminally attacked and strangled and lier body left lying in a bathtub in her apartment John Fiorenza 25 year old up holsterer convicted of lulling Mrs Titterton is in the death house at Sing Sing prison awaiting execution next week His attorney made a plea for clemency yes terday before Governor Herbert H Lehman almost at the hour Mrs Case was slain Case an employe of the Am erican Hotels association told po lice he received no answer when he attempted to telephone his wife about 6 p m to tell her he would be detained Left for His Home Deputy Chief Inspector John J Ryan said Case told him he left for his home worried by the lack of response to his call When he entered the apartment he no ticed overturned furnishings in the kitchen and heard the bath tub overflowing Case just had lifted the body of his wife from the tub when John Kalby superintendent of the Robert Morris apartments at 3706 80th came in to investigate complaints of the fam ily below that water was seeping through the ceiling SET FRANCES FEARS AT REST Report Few German Troops in Morocco Lasting Tracks Are Cleared Near Lime Springs After R R Accident LIME were cleared and regular service re sumed early Tuesday morning on the Milwaukee line following a wreck Monday when 27 freight cars were derailed between Lime Springs and Chester H was esti mated that damage amounting to several thousand dollars resulted from the accident A wrecker was brought from Mason City to clear away the wreckage Authorities i Investigating the accident expressed the opinion that a broken rail caused the de railment probably resulting from frost i r Several of the cars were demol ished as they tumbled down each side of the high abutment where the accident occurred About 100 feet of track were torn upby the accident None oE the was injured it was reported There were al most 50 cars in the freight train which was westbound Cars in this freight included oil ank cars coal cars and boxcars containing general merchandise The derailment occurred at a point about 15 miles northwest of Cresco How many of HUEBSCH FINED GUILTY PLEA Drop Embezzlement Charge Against Former Fort Dodge Chief FORT DODGE J Huebsch lormer Fort Dodge po lice chiefpleaded guilty to the charge of making n lalse return and was fined 500 by Judge 0 J Henderson in Webster county dis trict court here Monday after noon The embezzlement tharge was dismissed Before sentence was pro nounced Huebschs a 11 o r n e ys agreed to dismiss an appeal which the deposed police chief made to the civil service board for rein statement to the police depart ment Huebsch was indicted by a spe cial Webster county grand jury in an Massachusetts National Guardsmen Believed to Have Died HENNEPIN HI ers turned to the murky waters of the swollen Illinois river Tues day in quest of a missing airplane believed to have carried two Mas sachusetts national guardsmen to their deaths The craft was missmg on a projected Chicago to Moline III flight Three farmers said they saw a monoplane of similar de scription fall Monday night cither into the stream or the adjoining swamplands Aboard the missing plane were Lieut Frank Otis of Boston the pilot and Sergt John F Gibbons of Natick Mass both of the 101st observation squadron Mas sachusetts national guard They vere enroute to visit the lieuten ants father Dr Frank Otis at Moline Dr Otis and another son Wil liam arrived today to aid au thorities of three counties and a score of state highway patrolmen who made an unavailing night long search of the marshes William Casey whose farm Is near the river south of Hcnnepin said the plane circled the city al a height of about 300
