MASON CITY IOWA FRIDAY JANUARY I 19M 7c Copy Thls Paper ConiUU of Two SectionsSection A familiar ritual for President State of Union address follows ancient pattern By ARTHUR EDSON WASHINGTON A And so in the final year under Dwigh D Eisenhower we came to th dramatic moment of his now fa miliar ritual William N Fishbait Miller the House doorkeeper who great ly relishes this moment of glory bawled out The President o the United States The rear door swung open and one could spot the bald head and wide grin that hav become international trade marks President Eisenhower had arrived to tell Congress what he thinks of the State o the Union This democracy has few rit uals to match these State of the Union appearances they at FOR ONE THING tract an allstar east Long before the President ap pears the spectators begin to arrive One of the earlies Thursday was Mrs Richard M Nixon who like the vice presi dent appears to believe in go mg places quickly She was in her seat 41 minutes ahead of time and 23 minutes ahead of Mrs Eisenhower Then came the officials seg regated by their positions the Senate the ambassadors and other foreign officials the Su preme Court the Cabinet By the time Eisenhower ar rived every seat was filled Congressmen were lined around the railing at the back Spectat ors filled the aisles of the bal cony This was the eighth of Eisen howers State of the Union mes sages Seven of them he deliv ered in person In1956 while he was recuperating fVom i heart attack he sent the mes sage up to be read by a clerk AND QUICK NOW can you recall one thing he said in the other seven For all the commotion these State of the Union things usual ly deal with lofty general thoughts couched in highly for gettable words Thursdays speech fitted nicely into this great tradition Its interesting to watch the congressmen as Eisenhower talks When he said something must be done about agriculture for example he got a 1 o t of ap plause from the Republican side But Rep Harold D Cooley D who heads the House Ag Committee and who will have a lot to say about what kind of legislation is passed didnt lift a finger Cooley stared the ceiling THE PRESIDENT got his big gcst applause when he spoke of balancing the budget Presidents invariably promise to balance the oudget are in variably applauded and as you thoughtfully at HOPES HIGH George Niewald 71 Cresco farmer still has high hopes that the drilling rig in the background will bring in an oil well on his 80acre farm The well now being drilled on the Nie wald farm is the third in the last five years One has produced enough oil for Niewald to run his tractor Crowdsflock to Cresco farm to see oil drilling irst commercial o w a was being that the oil well in drilled near here sent crowds of curious peo le to the George Niewald farm Thursday and Friday Niewald 71 and retired said 7e was forced to place an em iargo on auto traffic in his driveway because the crowds vere interfering with the crew at the oil well The rush of spectators began fter Hans Jesperson president f the H and L Oil Co Omaha Jeb announced that he was ertain his firm will succeed n drilling the first commer ial oil well infowa The well is his tractor despite the clouds ofblacksmoke that billow out the exhaust pipe Nie wald said this crude oil is 75 per cent gas Niewald states he had been offered three times the land value of his farm since oil was found on it But he rejected the offer Cresco Mayor Frank Church said Soon no one will be able to buy a farm in the area He that farmers h ave in dicated a determination to hold can tell by studying your own tax bills invariably nothing much happens Republicans led the budget balancing cheers but now they got hearty support from Sen Harry F Byrd one of the Senates leading lecturers on economy in government And so it went This is like most rituals We go through them not so much to be converted to new thoughts as to be reassured in what we believe already Gowrie man killed when car overturns FORT DODGE Urelius 70 Gowrie wa killed early Friday when his car skidded on an icy patch of high way and plunged into a ditch about 3 miles south of here on U S 169 Urelius who was alone in the car was thrown out and the car rolled over on top of him He died enroute to a hospital SAME OTHER THAN the drilling ig however theres little to ee on Niewalds 80acre farm Theres no oil in evidence Ap arently the only petroleum col ected so far has been that hich has oozed to the surface rom around the drill and up thp haft The fact that there is oil in Forth Iowa has been estab shed for some time The main uestion is whether or not it is conomically feasible to get it out Many oil men have their doubts about this And much of the oil obtained to date from the more shallow wells merely is seepage and not qualified for commercial use One of the earlier wells pro On the inside Mason City News Pages 45 Latest Ma rkets 5 North Iowa Features 6 CubGazette 7 Society News 3 Sports 910 Clear
