Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - January 8, 1937, Mason City, Iowa MASON GITY GLOBEGAZETTE JANUARY 8 1937 Starts Saturday She scorned the man she risked her repu tation to de fend an innocent i backwoods girl ADDED News of the World COMING SOON TO THE PALACE The Official Film of the U S Department of Justice 1 Edgar Hoover and U S GMen YOU CANT GET AWAY WITH IT was spread on several street crossings and highway curves Ice Hinders Osage Suowplows Snowplows working on high ways in Mitchell county Friday were encountering difficulty be cause of slipping on ice under snow which measured 7 inches at Osage It was expected the roads could be cleared around noon al though motorists using chains said the highways were just pass able The thermometer recorded 5 above zero at 10 oclock Friday morning A strong wind Friday morning caused Winnebaso roads to drift considerably following a night when 8 inches of snow fell and a minimum of 5 below was recorded at Forest City Go Slowly at Northwood At Northwood where traffic was getting through on highway 65 although motorists were driv ing slowly because of the slippery condition of the roads 8 inches of snow were reported County plows were at work but little drifting was reported yet The nights tem perature was 6 below at Noith wood With a snowfall of 5 inches traffic was not hampered to any great extent in the Hampton vi cinity it was reported Friday morning The 7 ihch snowfall at New Hampton drifted badly it was re ported although stale highways are open The Mason City street depart ment had its four plows out soon after the full force of the storm struck and business people going to work Friday morning found Federal avenue open for traffic Buses Make Rounds Buses operated by the Osborne company were also able to make their complete rounds early Fri day morning When sleet began falling Wed nesday eight extra men were added to the street crew making 20 in all and 100 tons of sand were thrown on streets and side walks Five trucks were used in distributing this sand Practically the same crew was called out again Thursday night when snow began to fall heavily City Manager Herbert T Barclay stated that he expected the principal streets of the city to be cleared Friday for traffic County Koads Blocked Country highways were blocked in many places and the Jefferson Transportation company reported that it had no information early Friday morning regarding the condition of highways An ambulance from the state hospital at Iowa City was snowed in at Rockwell and two wreckers from the S R Chevrolet garage of Mason City were required to pull the ambulance from a snow bank and haulit to Mason City Police reported much skidding of cars and a few minor collisions but there were no serious acci dents and no injuries were report ed due to the storm Sheriffs of also reported that outside of Bad conditionsfor driving no serious accidents had occurred Dakota and Minnesota The blizzard Fort Dodge re ported blizzard also buried south ern Minnesota and eastern South Dakota under the heaviest snow of the season several points re porting up to 10 inches of new snow Fairmont with seven inches ot snow flying before high winds was virtually isolated at noon The North Western railroad canceled service in that area and bus lines sought cover The M St L train between Minneapolis and Spencer Iowa was annulled at New Ulm Minn HIGHWAY CONDITIONS AMES of Iowa highways Friday as reported by the Iowa highway commission Practically all roads in Craw ford Monona Ida Sac Carroll Calhoun Ppcahontas and Buena Vista counties blockaded Highway 75 open in Mononn and Woodbury counties Highway 20 open from Sioux City to Moville All highways in Faio AHo coun ty blocked except highway 18 Sleety snow drifting badly and may tie up roads in Lyon Sioux Osceola OBrien Clay and Dick inson counties All highways in southwest sec tion open but packed with from four to eight inches of sandy snow All highways in southeastern section open but loosely packed sleet in places makes driving dif ficult Rain fell and froze on top of sleet in vicinities of Burlington Washington Muscatine and Fort Madison making roads extreme ly slippery NBC THESAURUS IS PURCHASED BY KGLO Station KGLO has purchased the NBC Thesaurus which is pro duced and transcribed by the Na tional Broadcasting company it was announced Friday by F C Eighmey offer Love Your Magic Spell Is Everywhere STUDENTS MAKE CAPITOL MARCH LaFollette Talks to 1000 Strikers on Ouster of Glenn Frank MADISON Wis tP Gov Philip F LaFollette addressing 1000 striking students who in vaded his offices Friday refused to promise consideration of their demands for reinstatement of Dr Glenn Frank to the University of Wisconsin presidency The university board of regents ousted Frank amid cries poli tics from his defenders The vole taken Thursday night was S to 7 The governor told the student demonstrators he had invited President John Conant of Har vard university to come to Madi son to determine whether politics had motivated Franks dismissal Conant declined LaFoilette added March to Capitol The students angry over Franks dismissal gathered on the campus and marched to the capi to They swarmed into LaFol lettes office breaking up a press conference at which the governor had intended lo discuss the poli lics charge Police reserves from downtown headquarters were called to help capitol officers eject the demon strators LaFollette then agreed to ad dress them He was greeted with a mixed chorus of cheers and boos when he stepped upon the rostrum in the state assembly hall The stu dents listened quietly There were more cheers and boos after lie finished Y I hope you know this is not a very easy thing to do LaFollette said I am going to ask your in dulgence and talk without formal ities Tribute la University Your presence here is a trib ule to the University of Wisconsin A loud cry of assent filled the chamber I thank God that wo have a student body that will put on a demonstration like this al though it puts me in a tough spot This brought I have remained silent about Ihe president of the university for several years because it would have been improper for the gov ernor to make any statement while the matter was pending be loreMhe board of regents Regarding the charge of pol lics I would much prefer to have some disinterested group brought n to make a decision I have asked Dr James Conant oE Har vard to come here to make such an inquiry Gets Wrong Answer I ask youwould any of you do this if he had a skeleton in his closet I felt that if Dr Conant could have come here a great damage to the university could lave been avoided My sole con cern in this matter has been the university Governor LaFollete recalled the growth of the institution since the iays of John Bascom and referred Lo the lime when President Frank honored him by making him a member of the law school faculty and also offered him the deanship of that school Do you think that any man with my background would sit in the governors office and do in jury to the university he asked There were loud shouts ol yes Governor LaFollette ignored the response He said his own enemies are the ones who have been playing poli tics with the university using it as a means of attacking him while he was in office No Cry Raised Before During conservative adminis trations he declared no one ever raised a cry against the univer sity LaFollette heads the progressive party While the governor spoke his legal secretary was conferring with another group students who claimed the demonstrators did not represent the majority sentiment of thev student body The students began demonstra tions Thursday afternoon when 300 yelling the sky rocket and shoving blocked the doors to the hearing room and delayed the start of the afternoon session 15 minutes Police were called to open a way to the doors Many of them remained throughout the afternoon cheer ing for prexy and hissing wit nesses who gave antiFrank tes timony Relieved of Duties The president was relieved of his duties effective Friday al though the dismissal does not be come official until the end of the school year Dr Frank was given a leave of absence with pay and Dean George C Sellery of the col SIAMESE TWIN 11 YEARS OLD Thoughts Turn to Sister Who Died Separated by Operation GLENCOE Minn A The usual thoughts a gay party were absent as Zelda Alsleben single Siamese twin observed ier eleventh birthday Friday No celebration was planned be cause of snowblocked roads around the farm home nine miles southwest of here and Zcldas thoughts turned to her twin Elda who died last March It was the first birthday anniversary in which they had not been together Zelda and Elda were joined at the breastbone at birth but sev eral months later were separated through an operation performed by Dr H H Holm Both normally and appeared in perfect health until the early part of last year when
